Model 70 Exreme Weather SS

That's fair enough about magazines, a rifle is all but useless if you lose the mag. This is why I always have 2 of them, in the case of AICS type mag rifles, 4 per rifle. Buying a spare mag for a Sako 85 will make you cry a little, but I wouldn't leave the house without a spare. And I wouldn't go on an important hunt without a spare rifle either.

That was back in the day when I could only afford one rifle. I still just don't like having to keep track of stuff like extra mags.

The gun is fine but I would buy an ultimate shadow for much less and drop it in a Mcmillan. The Bell and Carslon stock that is on the Extreme Weathers is one of the worst designs I have seen. Thick everywhere, and short in the grip as mentioned.

A new one, landed, will be approximately 1K, depending on which one you get. Also figure on an approximately 6 month wait. That being said, they are very nice stocks!

I bought one in 2012 as a donor action for a 338-06 build. It was a 30-06, I shot it a little bit before sending all the parts in to the gunsmith. Was quite accurate. I find the B&C stock quite heavy so I replaced it with a McMillan Edge.

I put one together with a VX3 for a buddy. I was impressed with how smoothly the action cycled. Range time was great. Every shelf load from 130 to 140 grain held under an inch. The Federal 130 Powershock and the Barnes 130 TSX were .5". The 150s were a bit wilder by comparison but still stayed within 1.5".

Ian Robertson thinned up and reshaped the original Bell and Carlson stock that was on my 25-06 EW. He did a great job. Rob M finished it.
Turned out very well.

I've been a loyal Remington 700 fan for a while now. Tried a Sako, ended up selling it. I have to say, the Winchester M70 is definitely next on my list, especially the Extreme Weather SS. CRF, stainless, fluted barrel, B&C stock, all very nice features. The only drawback I see is the hinged floor plate. I don't understand why Winchester and Remington are still using that on their higher end rifles. I have to give that to Sako, the detachable magazine system on the 85 was the best I've seen in a stock rifle.

Because DBM really sucks and can completely screw up your hunt if you forget or misplace it. The guys that really complain about hinged floorplates are the ones that tend to be in and out of trucks all day. Plus they tend to tuck up nicer than a DBM and look better.

The kind of guys that forget or lose their mags also forget or lose their ammo, knives, tags, phones, GPS, water, matches, first aid kits, licenses or wallets. You either forget or lose stuff or you don't. You can only blame so much of that on the fact that a rifle has a DBM.

I can see how a DBM would make truck hunting easier but for me, it's just a feature I like on a rifle. It's actually a feature I expect on a rifle at a certain price point. I like to walk and stalk, I like DBMs on rifles, I like double espressos and I also like tall blondes. None of those things are necessarily connected.

Plus they tend to tuck up nicer than a DBM and look better.

I couldn't disagree more. But I'll agree on one thing, in the end, it's all about personal preference, isn't it?

It really is. In the end, I'd rather a guy lost his mag than his bolt, but that's another issue entirely. My neighbour's brother just died and he went to the funeral then took all the bolts out fo the old boy's guns and put them "somewhere safe". I have a very bad feeling about this decision.

I bought one in .338 shortly after they introduced the CRF again and have used it for quite a few hunts. Awesome with a Leupold 2.5-8 VX-III. Had a couple inches taken off the barrel and also had it rebedded. The stock is crap though - I have no idea who made them at the time. It would be a much nicer rifle if I put a new stock on it.
