Mike Walker I believe designed the 222 for Remington. It was first chambered in the Remington 721 bolt action rifle and introduced to the market in 1950. 222 Rem is still one of by all time favorite varmint cartridges

I agree. I lament the day I sold my triple duece.
In my opinion, the 222 is more accurate and I've owned several 222's and 223's.
The ammo for the 223 is easier to come by than the 222.
As far as ballistically, the 223 has the edge but I doubt that it makes any practical difference over the 222.
Don't go with 222 I had 3 2 rem 700 HV and 600 they all shoot in the .2s at 100Y with worked brass and 53gr SierraMK.I sold one in photo that i was sick after selling it but my 223rem shooting 69 & 75gr will out shoot the deuce at 200 & 300y. I have a new build that will be ready soon in 223r and a 30" stainless 1/7 twist to shoot the n80s & 90gr for F class.
There is three fellows shooting 223r with 1/7 twists, one a Krieger & other a Hart watched them shot a group of 5 shots at 300y one measured .520" the other .600"
And a fellow with a heavy barreled Savage 1/7 twist shooting at 300 y doing very very well also.
Go with the fast twist 223 and you will be pleased, you can't get enough powder in 222 case with bigger bullets.

When I clicked on the Hunting and Sporting Arms Forum, I was going to start a new thread asking about the 222 Rem? I looked down and saw a post that was close in content to mine so I asked the question. Only after I thought it was closely ansewered in the second post. Do you have an ansewer to the original question? Sorry to get a thread off topic, won't happen again.

Thanks, the reason I have asked this is that a friend has a model 70 in 222 rem.(So he claims)
and the serial numbers tell me it was made in 1949.Obviously something is wrong here as the 222 wasnt introduced until 1950 and winchester certainly wouldnt have produced a rifle for a cartridge not released to the general public until a year later.I asked him to double check the serial and he says he has given me the correct number.
As I said something is wrong and I will get to the bottom of it.
I have not seen the rifle and its quite possible its not even a winchester,but again he swears its a pre 64 model 70
??????

Could the rifle in question have been re-barreled at a later time?
