picked up a winchester model 70 ranger 30-06 serial G2162###. I believe it would have been produced in 1995, but not sure??

I have been told it's an excellent rifle, just cheaper stock. Any other info would be great.

Thanks

I put 6000 rounds through a M70 Ranger 30-06. It was my first centerfire rifle. The floor plate eventually split. It wasn't worth putting a new barrel on it and getting a new floor plate. They are a push feed bolt.

Its just the entry level M70. Its a full size stock. Birch. It has factory iron sights which are decent enough.

And yes, Ranger part of my handle is a salute to that old rifle. That barrel was so shot by the time I game up on it. The reloads were so far forward, they would never chamber in any other rifle. I had to reseat the bullets deeper, for the new M70.

I asked a similar question - Win Mod70 Ranger. Light, accurate & decent factory irons as already been said, is what I found. Some have taken to re-finishing the stock and underneath the Birch finish is a tiger stripe pattern apparently.

I've used/swapped rifles with my friend a few times for the day & found it to be a nice light carry in & out of stands/watches. Maybe not the "latest & greatest" but it'll get the job done. The above Mod 70 still resides with my friend.. For now.. :D
