i would like to put iron sights on my mod 70 winchester .338???? its 26 inch barrel now i will cut it to 24 inches then the sights , any suggestions what to use will out blowing the bank account ,? wade

There are all kinds of aftermarket M70 sights. A net search will turn them up. Williams gun sights for example.
You may want to reconsider cutting the barrel too. The muzzle flash and blast is bad enough on a .338. Plus the loss of velocity. Although you won't lose much by cutting off 2".

You don't mention wether the iron sights are for back up purposes or 1st line use. If they are for first line use, I strongly suggest a rear ghost ring and large front blade with a crown. It's a very hard combination to beat under quick sight access and low light conditions. bearhunter

i have considered the velocity loss , but i think it will do what i want with a 24 inch barrel, back up sights i guess i would be happy with a single express style v on the back and a ivory bead , and sighted for 100 yds maximum, i will use it with a scope , but prefer to carry it most time no scope with iron sights,

Wade,

I know two guys who use iron-sighted 338 Win Mags with 20 inch barrels for backup work while in the field. I have shot one of the rifles and it was very easy to handle and pointed like an extension of your arm.

My own rifle while guiding years ago was a 20 inch 375 H&H. It lost less than 50 fps when we shortened the barrel from 26 inches. Chronographed the same box of ammo before and after.

My current iron-sighted baby is a 1903 Springfield in 358 Norma Mag that Bill Leeper put together for me. It has a Lyman receiver sight and a front bead on a steel ramp.

It does the job......in spades!

Wade, if you shoot with any snow on the ground, I've found a white bead to be hellishly hard to see, even on the black background of a deer or moose.....I've always preferred a brass bead.
