Model 70 supergrade 300win mag rechamber to 300h&h??

A few years ago Jason Spencer (Gunco) converted a 2000 era CRF model 70 Super-Grade .338WM "Boss" by installing a Douglas .300 H+H pre-chambered 26" barrel on it, popped off the mag spacer, changed ejector etc and sent it back to me for $700-800 I recall. Turned out very nicely though I sold it for a 1954 vintage one eventually. I keep hoping FN/Winchester will announce a special edition "Super-Grade/Featherweight" someday. Below is the rifle I had converted from a .338WM.

You and I both have those hopes but I doubt that it will ever happen in my practical life time. I'm going to have to just part with the cash and do what you did and buy a 50's vintage one. Trouble is the majority of them are state side and with the dollar the way it is at present the bank account would take a major hit, so I am patiently waiting for some old Canadian widow to advertise one for sale. A super grade in Pristine condition of course..!!!

I've seen very few 70 S-G's in any caliber here in Canada at shows etc. Years ago I had in my hands a really poor one in .300, though it had since been re-chambered to Weatherby, wore an ugly recoil pad, drilled for side-mount etc. It was discussed on this forum years back. I didn't regret passing on that one. My current one is a 1954 made standard pictured far left:

I prefer the modern stock profile for shooting/hunting plus I wouldn't worry about damaging an original. I'm half tempted to convert my 75th Anniversay .30-06 to H&H, but I broke it in last November on a Whitetail so best to leave it as-is.
Cheers

longbranch: nice stable of M-70's you have there. I have a 75th as well, it was my 60th birthday present to me, it also has a couple deer to it's credit. "Guns International" has many 300H&H's on there. There are a couple of beauties on there. The prices are all over the map, but generally they start at about 2200 and work there way up. Buy the time you tack on 30% exchange, plus import fees etc. it makes a big hurt in the retirement fund. In the mean time until the dollar improves I'll keep an eye out for the old widow who has one for sale here in Canada.

I agree. I regretted selling my first model 70 .300H+H made in 1954. Thought I'd never get the chance to own another. Sure enough after putting the word out that I was looking, another 1954 made one came my way locally. Hey if Winchester would do a run of 7X57 Featherweight/Super-Grades just for Cabela's it's just a matter of time before they run something in .300 H+H I'm hoping.

You want to start with a 30-06, then you needn't rebarrel it. Open the bolt face, rechamber, and lengthen the bolt throw, all very easily done. I did a supergrade from 338 WM to 340 Wby, not a big deal.

This. You will want a 375 H&H mag box and follower as well. There are some small nuances that could complicate things, but are likely unnecessary.

longbranch; if Cabelas has that much influence maybe we should get them to ask Winchester for a run of 300H&H's. Only trouble is then they will be all gauded with Cabelas embellishments and logos. At least now you know who to put the old widows in contact with. ;)

I'd be in for one for sure...(like I need one eh). Who could resist. My wife is very understanding.
