Model 700™ Varmint-Tactical Rifle

Flashback to 1948, Remington brings out a rifle with a round receiver.
All about cost cutting and marketing, it won't shoot. How can a rifle with a round receiver a funny little extractor and a soldered bolt handle compete with 71 and 64 Winchesters? Just a fad, it won't last.

I bought one.
VTR .223 Ijust finished breaking in the barrel and I will start load development this weekend. Lets hope I get some where this weekend,

I will be using the following components (as this is what I have "in-stock")

40gr Nolser Ballistic Tips
55gr Hornady V-max
56gr Remington PSP
50gr hornady V-Max
50gr Speer TNT

if I can find them I'll also use:
36gr Barnes Varmint Gernades
70gr Berger VLD

As for powders:
BL-C2
H355
H322
Varget
IMR 3031

Primers:
CCI Benchrest
Winchester SR
Federal SRM
CCI SRM

So I'll work with these combinations and see what I get

So far she really likes the 40gr pills .5 or better grouping at 100yds. I am really interested in seeing what she will do with the heavier VLD's
 
If a triangular barrel had anything to do with makng a gun more accurate, cool quicker, etc... The benchrest crowd would have figured it out 30 years ago.

Nothing more than marketing. But that works as it does look pretty cool.

Curious if Remington barrels are button rifled? cutting 3 big swaths of steel off of a buttoned tube would do nothing for the straightness.
 
Marketing Fad? Well Marketing fad has brought us the WSM's the Ultra Mags etc, etc.Who has fell prey to those calibers? Every year most of the manufactures bring something new to the table to tempt the weak. As stated by others some different strokes for different folks.

You do realize that's incorrect, right? The triangle barrel does encourage rapid heat dispersion, but not because of the surface area.

A tubular barrel has more surface area. Measure it yourself :)

I love it! Nice and light, I like the lines. Going to buy one in 308Win and call it my new deer rifle.:dancingbanana:
 
i just pick one up in 308 on friday and shot it on sunday. it defiantly is a shooter. i dont have nay pics of the targets but its a 1moa and better gun if can do my part. the trigger has no creep at all.

I handled one at the buffalo Gun center on Saturday, not my cup of tea, very light. I compaired it to the 700 VS on the rack next to it and I would take the 700VS hands down. The VTR is very light, just not a solid feeling rifle in my opinion.
 
I don't understand why light weight is such a desirable factor in a rifle such as this. It is an application where it will be supported in a fixed position most of the time. I see the design as a detriment to its performance potential, on top of the possibility that the extra machining beyond contouring can introduce stresses and flaws in geometry.

If it's sitting on a sandbag, bipod, or some sort of expedient rest most of the time, I doubt that it needs to balance like the lightweight hunting rifles. And when considering that weight dampens much of the forces that influence rifle movement, I believe that a heavy gun is desirable. I'm not sold on this concept, and my money will go toward a rifle with a standard heavy barrel, fast twist, fabulous trigger, rugged build, and ergonomic stock. (and it'll be a lefty....If i'm spending good money, it had better be built for me. Telling a customer to "suck it up, you can use your other hand" is a great way to lose a sale!)

That's my $7.62. Spend your money wherever you want.

Get off the range and pack your rifle somewhere! They are for shooting things not just paper! You want a rifle to weigh 35 lbs and shoot paper get one of those cool aluminum stocks and paint it pink.
 
My guess is.....When a barrel i heated it always bends the same way...lets say up
The triangler shape allows them to remove metal from the sides, and put to the top. same weight more rigid on top side only... I think it sole reason of it's shape is to decrease barrel deflection once heated.

Muzzle brake on .223 seroiusly awsome idea, be great for my daughter
 
Bought one ,tried it, Rem. umc 55gr .223 5 shots just over 3/4 inch. Now I have the trigger turned down below "siezed" I will try it again.Total rounds to date 40.
 
I am still working on a load and I need to adjust the trigger yet, It shoots pretty damn well! I droped the ball on the last shot but .855 for a five shot group ain't bad eh?

I still need to adjust the point of aim but I will probably do that tommorow. Oh ya mine is a .308 not a .223
 
well i got out with mine on firday and im nothing but impressed. the high two were the first two shot out of a clean bore then the three shot group was next the the large hole is my 5 shot group. at 100 yards with hornady 168gr HPBT match rounds. measures .875 outside to outside so about .567 center to center.

Took my vtr .223 out again,inconsistant groups,will put three shots close together and throw flyers,the three shots are not neccesarily one two three.
Problem appears to be the stock,got home pulled out dremel tool relieved pressure points,stock now bears on one side of barrel.Found hogue stock in EE ,will update later.

Is this how we measure groupings? I thought that groupings were measured centre to centre meaning your results are actually better than indicated.

Edit: Or does the tool make an allowance for the bullet diameter?
