model 700 vs. 788

788 is discontinued and parts are not easily obtainable..... some parts are not available, period. It was a very cheap, very accurate rifle when it was made. It has rear locking lugs and will not take the hot reloads as well as the 700. The trigger is not great either.

Way more goodies available for the 700..... it all depends what you want to do...

Dennis is correct, as usual. I'd just like to add that the 788 has a stiffer receiver then the 700, and a longer barrel shank thread, if memory serves, both of which contribute to accuracy. In terms of a project gun, retained value, and parts availability, I would go with the 700 (and I own a half a dozen 788s, so I do like them). - dan

Should work--a 22-250 788Rem would be a sure thing. The rear locking lugs mean that there is no gap in the action in the front of the action for the front locking lugs of other model rifles for the bolt lugs to turn into. This means that short cartridges will feed better with no inclination to gilpoke into the lug cutout area. Timney has been talking about producing triggers for these for a couple of years. Canjar does now. Nothing else seems to go wrong with them. Mags are the biggest issue, to locate extras but surely someone will start making aftermarket mags at some point. I have seen them modified for M-14 mags and even 45acp Colt mags.
