I am thinking of buying one of these and looking for input regarding what would be a good caliber to go with. Looking for a flat shooting all round (deer, elk, moose) chambering.
Also, if anyone owns one, what are your opinions?

All around, flat shooting, .300WM or .338WM. But you could pretty much take any of the cals they offer the XCR in, and do alright.

Shot beside a young fellow shooting one last Sunday in 300 Ulta Mag he was a big man 6.2" and 250lbs, he was doing okay at 300 yards about 5.5" groups. but man he was getting rocked, I noticed him rub his shoulder once, after firing. He fired a box of shells in a hour and half his last group was 7" recoil sensitive or cleaning ??
I would go wityh the wsm

If you want flat, buy a 7mm Rem Mag and shoot 160gr Accubonds (if the rifle likes 'em) on everything. If you handload you can easily get 3000fps. Factory stuff float a little over 2900 fps out of factory barrels, but the recoil-preformance-trajectory is about as good as it gets.:D.

Wsm

I just got a 300 WSM in an XCR an love it. It has the 24" barrel and is a nice light fairly compact gun for a 300 magnum. Recoil is pretty mild to!

IMO XCR's are overpriced, for what you get...an SPS with a nicer finish on the barrel and action. Double the price?? :puke:

I have a friend with an XCR in 270 winchester and he really likes it. He has taken a few big bucks and one nice bull elk with it. I tend to agree with tod though, they do seem a little bit overpriced.

bull####. LIES! all LIES! everyone knows a .270win cannot kill an elk. ;) :D

Damn you caught me lying:redface:. Truth is the 270 just kept bouncing off the damn thing, good thing I was backing him up with my H&H, and even that barely got through its thick hide!

My two bits:

If it's going to be mostly deer with the odd elk or moose, than I'd choose the standard .270 or it's WSM cousin. Be forwarned that the WSM may restrict you to one less round in the mag.

If it's going to be deer, elk and moose on an equal basis, then I'd choose the 7mm mag.
