Model 71..... I just can't decide!!!!

True enough. Spring Black Bear had been on the agenda for this year but that got cancelled as my lovely lady isn't fond of Bear as table fare. So, updated plan, Island Deer with 200gr Hornady handloads, and/or Moose, providing I get a draw, using handloads with 250gr Barnes originals.
Best I can do for you BUM.

Another true humanitarian. I love you guys!

. I've never reloaded 348. Does anyone have any good recipes or words of wisdom?

Check out my thread on primer strikes when I started loading for my Browning 71.....If I was smarter i'd link it for you....but me not so smart[/QUOTE]

An interesting read, thanks.

I'm going to try to get 2300fps out of the 250gr and 2500fps out of the 200's. That would make me happy although ultimately pressure and accuracy will dictate the final loads. I'm thinking of trying H4350 and H4831. I've typically had great success with both those powders.

As for hunting both deer and moose with just one load, I doubt it will happen. I'm too much of a rifle crank to try and make it simple. Last year I shot a huge bull with a 250gr silvertip (old style-not ballistic) out of my 338 and the results were simply awesome. Last night while rooting around in the cabinet, I found 47pcs of pulled 250gr silvertips for the 348. If I can make those work, I'll definitely give them a try.

I'll keep you posted on my results. Thanks for all the encouragement!!

I have a '56 era model 71 with a 24" barrel. With 55gr Varget, and 200gr hornady Interlocks, I beleive it was pretty much duplicate the silvertip load, and it quite accurate in my rifle. For my moose hunt a couple years ago I practiced shooting 8" paper plates out to 225 yds with irons,I was impressed with the load.I think it was a bit over 2500fps at the muzzle and around 2800 ft/lbs( just off the top of my head)

I'm starting to think this is a great idea. I'll hunt the whole rifle season with the 71. I have some 200gr silvertips I'll load for deer and some 250gr Barnes originals for moose. I've never reloaded 348. Does anyone have any good recipes or words of wisdom?

No, sorry. Not a reloader.

I just sold all my brass but I have a box of Hornady 200 gr FP if you are interested?

Got a photo? Mine, pictured in post #6 is of 1953 vintage. In most of my jacketed loads I'm using IMR 4064 and/or IMR 4320. With cast bullet loads, and primarily for plinking, Trail Boss and H 4227.
