Model 92 Beretta is the grip really all that big?

I’ve been seeing a fair amount of inconsistent information on the net about the actual size of the model 92 grip, but how big is it really?

Can someone run a fabric tape around their and post what the actual circumference is? Take the measurement about an inch down from the underside of the trigger guard, thats pretty close to the split between the middle finger and the ring finger.

I’ve read a couple of articles from gun writers who say their 92 FS similar to a Glock G19 (5.5” to 5.625”), but that really goes against the consensus. I’m starting to wonder if the 92’s “hugeness” reputation was in response to US military guys switching from the model 1911 to the M9 and being shocked at the difference between a single stack 45 to a double stack 9mm.

Is the Beretta grip similar to most other all metal double stack 9mm’s like the CZ75 and High Power P35 (both of whom clock in at a grip circumference of 5.625”)?

Thanks for the help guys. It would be nice to see an actual number here instead of speculation or a subjective description like “it feels smaller/bigger”.

I just measured my M9 and it’s about 14.5cm or 5.7”. I’ve got small hands but the 92 fits me ok…I actually prefer the regular grip to the Vertec style.

I'm not so sure about it being huge, but I'm an XL in glove sizes so I find the 92FS to be a pretty nice pistol to handle. Great ergonomics for me, definitely my preferred pistol platform.

It is fatter than a Glock 17/19. Far fatter than a single stack 45. I’ve got short fingers but big palms. I have to adjust my grip around the butt to get to the mag release. I shot it well enough, but it never felt like a good fit. I would not buy one for me.

I use the thinner panels made by Hogue. The factory ones aren’t much fatter, but the flatter contour of the Hogue panels help enough to make it just right for me. Also the rubber vs plastic gives me better control. There are thinner panels yet, but I think you’d have to get shorter bushings for those. Proper grip is most important with these Berettas for consistent accuracy.
If you don’t have a good grip, they tend to lead you to shoot left.

look up m9a3 review videos and youll see the difference between the 1911 and beretta size with the grip option. it isnt much wider, its more in the palm really.

Also, manipulating the safety/decker repetitively for extended periods during practice in and out of the holster, tends to chafe the web of my hand. I use as high of a grip to the bore line as possible. That’s my only gripe with these pistols no matter the size of panels used. Otherwise, it’s an amazing pistol once you lean to shoot it accurately.

I have a gorgeous inox, but I've got wide palms/short fingers and find the Beretta almost unusable too...

I have an older former Italian police 92. I put aftermarket Turkish wooden grips from ebay on it and it measures six inches.

I think the girth of the grip combined with the length of reach to the trigger for the first DA pull is what makes the Beretta feel so big. Add in thick grips and that really makes a big package.

The Vertec grip, a shorter reach trigger and thin grips will all help, but it still feels like a big gun overall.

I've never found the Beretta 92 to fit my hand well. And I've owned a few over the years.

Much prefer the CZ 75/85 +/or BHP grip.

NAA.

The 92G LTT Elite with the thin G10s gets good reviews (wrt accuracy quality and grip size and feel) compared to other variants.

I have had 2 or 3, never got use to them, I have one of the surplus ones now, because it was cheap,
Too slippery, just feels wrong, shoots fine.
I like the CZ, main gun has been 1911's, and 22 target guns with lots of slant.
Can't get use to a glock.

Thanks guys, that confirms everything I was looking for! Special kudos to the guys who got a tape out and measured their grips, I’m pretty much limited to a 5 5/8” circumference grip without compromise so the 92 is likely too big for me even with slim grips on.

It’s too bad since they definitely have that “cool factor”!

I measured mine and got tied up, sorry.
Standard 92F , factory plastic grips, right on 5 5/8 in
941 Jericho, standard plastic grip, just under the trigger guard 5 1/4 in, both guns are a bit fatter at the base of grip, did not measure them there
Should have done the standard , 1911, but just thought about it now.

Interesting thing is both guns mag are exactly the same size, so it is in the thick casting of the alloy frame of the Beretta , the Jericho is a steel frame, just feels great.
The mags will slide into each gun the same, I have also used Ruger mags in the 941, just need a new notch.
BTW the newer mags will fit these older heal release mags with a quick shot with the Dremel wheel.
I can reach the trigger fine on the 92, I think it is the smooth frame, if I was going to keep it, which I am not, as I have too many, I would run a bit of checkering on the front strap, and maybe back as well. Been a year since I have had them out.

Thanks Marshall! Maybe if the 92 was wearing those ultra thin G10 grips it might make enough difference, apparently Wilson combat makes a short reach trigger as well, all of that and the D springs might make t manageable for even my stumpy fingers.

Why not go to a gunstore and handle one for yourself?

I live in Northern BC, so any gunstores near me will have your average Remchester in 338 Loudenboomer but pistols are rare. Closest guaranteed place (that's not under water right now) would be Edmonton, but that's an 8 hour drive, 2 tanks of gas, and a hotel room.
