Looking for some help with a old 94. When I go to load my 94 it appears that the carrier blocks the spring cover from going in to allow the rounds into the magazine. Now if I lever it a bit and push the carrier down I can load it until the gun is levered again.

Is This a common problem? How can I fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Luke

Could be several things. Broken carrier spring, dirt in wrong place, burr on inner loading gate, binding carrier pivot screws or bent carrier. Sounds like it needs to be taken right down, cleaned and inspected for worn or broken parts. You say old 94 just how old is it? Wear may be an issue.

It can. Sometimes the spring will break shift a little and seize enabling it to still apply pressure but not fully articulating. Have a good look at some disassembly procedures and go at her. They are not too bad to deal with. You will likely find something amiss when you get it apart. I bet it has not been apart since old Winchester put it together. The fact that it functions after being loaded tells me it is something minor like debris or a burr.

There will no need to remove the cartridge guides on your rifle. They are a pain to work with and you need a special offset type tool to work with them. Just a tip when taking a 94 apart.

That can be built up with weld and filed to function. Most parts you buy will be used and worn also. Worth a try if you know someone that can put a bead of weld on the worn area. Just reference some good ones in photos for a master to file the weld to dimension. I had a local shop build up the action bar tab on a old Winchester model 12 shotgun. About and hour of filing and fitting and the old girl was good for another 50 years of hard use. Replacement parts would have been well over 100.00 US to make the repair.

Check Homestead parts.com(all one word) in the US they have them for $16.75 usd plus shipping. Since there is talk of a mail strike you may have to wait a bit. I have used them a few times for parts and they are quite good.

I had the same issues with my Grandfathers 1894 38-55 .....if you cycled the lever half way it would allow you to load it...otherwise no go.It was the carrier spring that I replaced for $6 US back when you could legally buy parts.Picked up another spare JIC .......Harold
