Hi All,
Was at a swap meet this morning and picked up a BYF 44. The bolt matches the action, the bottom metal and the stock are non matching (no idea what the stock is off, looks pretty bad). The bore on it is very nice and the blueing on the barrel is very good, not so much on the action. I don't know much about mausers but from what I've read 1944 was the highest year of production. I looked at some pictures on the internet and most of them looked pretty rough. The machining on this one looks pretty good. I'm thinking it may be an early 44, the serial number is 4 digit and it looks like there is a C after it. The waffenmark stamp is 135.

Here are some pictures: http://imgur.com/a/z6C8x

I know next to nothing about Mausers and would be interested to know more, I'd especially like to know what would be appropriate for a stock on this?

Thanks

Cool byf44 barreled action, looks to have been polished at one time, probably reblued.

The stock looks like a Columbian Mauser stock... Rare in it's own right...

Lever Arms out of Vancouver is selling Yugoslavian Refurbed WW2 German K98 stocks. A Laminate, cupped buttplate K98 stock would be correct for that byf44.

Enjoy!

If it didn't cost you an arm and a leg I'd say it's a nice find! The receiver has definitely been scrubbed and polished, same goes for the bolt body. In addition, the rear bolt pieces appear to be reblued. How's the bore look?

It definitely deserves a proper K98 stock. If you'd like to get technical you could search for one with WaA 135 stamps but it really isn't necessary as this is just a shooter. I'd simply focus on picking up a nice cupped butt plate stock set preferably with matching bands if possible.

I happen to own a matching byf44 so I've attached a couple pictures of the receiver and bolt. This will give you a better idea of what original finish looks like.

Thanks for the pictures, I took a quick look at the bore when I picked it up and the rifling looked strong all the way to the crown (didn't see any pitting). I have some WIPE-OUT spray soaking in there now, I'll be running some patches through it later tonight.

Made by Mauser Oberndorf in 1944, your byf 44 is a c block production and fairly early, so the receiver would have originally been finished a bit more smooth than student of history's g block but it looks like someone may have polished and refinished yours. Still, as others stated, a cool find and should make a great shooter.

The bore is good - very good. Will start looking for an appropriate stock. Maybe on the EE, the ones listed on Lever arms are pretty pricey. I might have some luck locally as well. At the time of sale the seller mentioned he had some other stuff with the package as well. Turns out the other stuff included 30+ rounds surplus ammo, 50 or so unfired RP brass, set of Lee dies, Bayonet, tub of milsurp pulled bullets of some kind(not sure how many, the tub looks like the old style tall tobacco tub 3/4 full), and 3 boxes of commercial bullets.
