Saw a thread on leverguns that Ronald Coburn in a letter hinted that it may be back as an answer to Marlin ripping off the Savage bolt gun, fingers crossed.

A 99 in tuperware. Maddog would be proud :D
It would be great to have the old beastie back. But I fear what tinkering they would do to it.
Then again, if they tinker with it, the value of Maddog's collection remains un-impinged.

I doubt they'd be able to remake one into production of a quality that would be affordable to us meer mortals............. ;) :D

If they do it right it is going to be expensive. My understanding the issues that killed the 99 was that tooling was all worn out and had to be replaced (very expensive capital) and the additional cost of the amount of hand labour it took to assemble the rifle drove the price through the roof. If it can come back with style and quality I'm sure that it will be a hit even at the higher price. But if they just try to float something off on the 99 brand it will be a diaster. JMTCW

I have also heard that story. The 99 was made using traditional machinery, and the action required hand fitting. Wouldn't be surprised if the C model didn't appear as a cost cutting measure, rather than because of customer interest in a detachable magazine. With modern production technology, it might be possible to get them back in production. Pricing might be similar to the Winchester/Browning '86s and 71s.

They're putting nice wood on the Classic series so getting nice handles wouldn't be a problem. The 99 was dropped when the company went broke. Ron Coburn saved it from ruin and now that Savage is very profitable, they could quite possibly tool up for a new 99 and make a buck at it. Savage isn't considered a crappy gun these days and many people, me included would pay a good dollar for a new one. Have you seen what they want for the 50th anniversary 110? I want one but you can bet if they build it, demand in the U.S. would be so high we won't see any for awhile.

John.....I know all about the Winny suckers out there, I even have an 1895, but at least it is a Browning. :D No harm................No Foul. Someone has to buy Remchesters.

That new 50th is nice, but overpriced for what it is. Les

Apparently from what I'm hearing from the factory is that it'll be like the old 1920's style 1899's. Not a mag fed rifle either, supposedly it's supposed to have a polymer rotor in it like the old brass rotors on the 1899's Walnut stocks, not synthetic. I'd like to see them bring it out in the 7mm-08 again.

Polymer rotor? Hmmm.....
Still, the rotary mag is cool. Wonder if the cartridge counter made the grade. Hopefully, it will be available in a few modern cartridges, not just the historic ones like the Winchester/Browning lines keep doing.
