Model Seven accuracy?

KC.........try bedding the action and floating the barrel except for a patch at the front of the fore end and apply about 6lbs up pressure on the barrel. I'll bet it will shoot sub MOA with this small adjustment.

I agree. I bedded and floated a pressure point 243(not a remy) and ended up having to put the pressure point back in the stock to get it to shoot again. Even turned the crown in the lathe trying to get it to shoot before adding back the pressure point.

I beeded the action and first 3" of barrel. I have NOT removed the pressure point but will check with weights to see how much pressure there is. I'm unable to get out and shoot until Friday morning, most likely.

When i bed a Rem i bed only the first 1" forward from the recoil lug - Don't know what others do ? RJ

How do you measure how much up pressure you are putting on the barrel?

Place the rifle between two chairs with a sandbag under the barrel near the muzzle and one under the butt.
Suspend increasing weights from the front sling eye until you can slip a paper between the tip of the stock and the barrel.

I have a model 7 ss in 308. I never tired too many reloads for it but lucked out that it does well with 165 gamekings and 165 partitions. Found a load that would give me 3 shot 1" accuracy and I was more than happy with that. To me the model 7 is purely a lightweight / compact HUNTING rifle. It is not a bench rifle designed to print one hole groups all day long and to me if you can get 3 shot 1-1.5" groups you should have no problems at practical hunting ranges. Try a bunch some different load combinations and see what the gun can do - I wouldn't expect 0.5" groups from a model 7.

So. I bedded the action and three inches of barrel. There is still a little pressure at the front, maybe 5 lbs.
Today's loads shot much better. Best group was 7/8" for three shots at 100 yards. I tried 129 SST's and 140 SST's, both using N160 powder. The 140's shot noticeably better. The upshot for me is I know the rifle CAN be accurate. I will spend more time on loads and consider a new trigger.
