Modern ,41 Long Colt bullets

I think more folks use hollow base than heeled IMO
Better to hide the lube inside the case. While no-one is carrying them in a lint filled pocket or on a dusty gunbelt much these days, the theory behind the HB bullets is still sound.

you need a heeled base bullet or a hollow base bullet somewhere around .387" reason for both is the case was made for a heeled bullet witch has a smaller diameter at the base and will not fit a .40 cal bullet in the case

It's hard to make that .401" bullet fit in the .386" case mouth. If you did expand the brass to fit the bullet then it wouldn't fit in the chamber. And that's why heeled and hollow base bullets are used.

I bought a hollow base mold from Bernie, too. It works fine but the bullets are kind of fugly. I had a Lyman 41 colt HB mold that worked Ok but it was the 185 gr version. I sold it on ebay and got over $300 for it. Heeled bullets can be made to shoot well but they are a PIA to crimp. Hollow base is much easier to load but harder to cast. It's a trade off.

many of the complaints about inaccurate bullets are simply because most bullets are too hard. Pure lead or a 30-1 lead/tin mix will work best. The HB bullet is almost .020" undersize for the groove diameter, so it needs to be very soft to expand that much to grip the rifling and seal the bore at low .41 colt pressures. WW bullets are a bit hard for that. Loads that are too light won't work for the same reason.

There is a group buy at Cast Boolits for a double cavity, 200 gr HB mold in a cramer style mold that is light years ahead of the Old West or Lyman molds. It will cost approx US$90 plus $15 shipping. This is the only multi-cavity HB 41LC mold that I've ever heard of. Anyone who wants one should get on the list because when this GB is done we'll probably never see another one.

Anyone interested in joining the group buy but not sure how to go about it - drop me a PM. Here's the link: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...-2-cavity-Brass-Hollow-Base-41-Long-Colt-mold

From Cast Boolits:
How the group buy works is you sign up by posting how many molds you want and giving your disguised email address. When the manufacturer is ready to make/ship the mold he will send a (FRAUD ALERT) invoice to your email address. You pay thje invoice and he ships the mold to you. Easy Peasy.

Man I hope they get around to making those molds one of these days

If I hadn't just called the RCMP to try to end the Ranchhand stock, group buy fiasco, I might get in on the group buy myself.
But...once bitten twice shy.
I'm almost done building a 2nd HB plunger (term?) to get a thinner skirt on the 41LC HB in the hope that it'll work with WW's
I've an Elmer style .357 HB that throws a bullet with a really thin HB skirt. I'd like to get my Bernie's Mold tweaked to throw a bullet with a thinner skirt; I think WW's might work then.

NEI makes one but as usual their service was #### and the product not so great. I had to reshape the hollow pins as they were left rough.

My personal favorite for a .41 HB mold was the Rapine, but they are no longer in business. Hard to find much like the old Lymans.

I had a hollow base Old West from Bernie in .44-40 and can also say they are great molds.

I read about the problems with that stock maker in Saskatchewan. I hope you get that sorted, sucks that you lost your stock.

OTOH, Group buys with MP molds on Cast Boolits Forum aren't much of a risk. MP Molds doesn't ask for payment until the mold is ready to be shipped. If you do sign up for the group buy you still have the option to change your mind and be removed from the group buy any time you want.
