I am in the market ATM for a half decent modern 7.62x39 rifle, and I apologize in advance if this has been answered but I cant seem to find the info I am looking for, not to mention I haven't been in the loop with the whole gun ban and haven't been able to shoot due to lack of places to actually go, how ever that being said I have acquired a spot to shoot finally and really want to mess with a good semi auto rifle that isn't .556

I am not knocking a 556 I love them, but I like the 7.62 because ammo is easier for me to get and its a bit cheaper. I have found a few rifles I like the styles on but honestly don't know enough about them nor can I find a great amount of detail on them regarding reliability or ruggedness.

I like the Kodiak Defence wk 181 gen 2 and I also like the black creek labs rifles as well but so far have gathered to stay away from them. I am looking for reliability and the ability to mod it easily, type 81s are cool but they cost as much plus they are just bone stock wood, and I'm not even sure about the availability on parts for them either.

YES YES get a sks...been there have that, I love the sks but want a modern rifle to go along side it. what do you reccommend and why?

Thank you so much for reading this far and iIreally do appreciate your time!

Happy shooting.

Could risk it on a gen 3 m10x, or a t81 for under 1500. Other than that the sks is a classic you can get a hical mag adapter for it so it takes detachable 10 round legal xcr mags, sks D takes ak mags and can be had for 1200. Id stay away from any ar180 platforms as they have significant issues in 556 let alone x39.

You're getting it right. Reliability comes with CZ858, SKS, Type 81. And all of them are not modern rifles. Other options are modern, but not reliable - WK, BCL, Mickey Mouse rifle (though you can find some ppl here and there with a decent round count). Truth is, for a small manufacturer to pull reliable and rugged - it should be a almost perfect clone of proven design, made by qualified team on expensive machinery = EXPENSIVE.

ya i have one of these already which works great and i love my sks, I was just hoping to get something newer that was easier to mod, seems right now theres almost nothing in stock for mod options other then a crap ati stock lol.

That is true for all you have stated, its just a shame that its either hit or miss with the Canadian new stuff.

iv never heard of it is it new?
More known for the Raven 9 mm and 5.56 versions. Haven't heard much how the 7.62x39 mm versions are doing, other then a custom bolt carrier and firing pin, and non-AR compatible upper and lower receiver, it takes AR parts, functioning as a DI-ish internal piston firearm. It will allow the use of add-ons missing from the SKS, and should allow the use of XCR 10 round pistol mags. Not sure of the taper of 7.62x39 will be an issue when using 5 or 10 rounds. Hopefully some forum members can provide some feedback.

I can't say for the others but got a Kodiak WK181 a month ago and shot 1270 rounds through it now of surplus and I absolutely love it. Yes, during my research I also saw the Kodiak history with their 5.56 versions, but my conclusion was that the 7.62x39MM variant seem to mostly be good and not face the same issues. I saw a few Youtube videos about it and that CFET report. The piston design for example is not the same.

I do not have a whole lot of experience with other guns though so I can't really compare. I am coming from my banned Savage Arms MSR Recon 15 .223 AR15. That's also why I was looking at something modern like and didn't go T81. And seems like a pain to modernize. Someone made me shoot though with irons was fun but at the end of the day I'm glad I didn't get a T81.

If you can get past the platform's shaky start with less than ideal reliability during the past several years, the 2024 M+M Gen 3 M10X is finally sorted out and running well. Mine is only at around 400 rounds (with 1 stoppage), but another owner is now over 2000 rounds and counting. He had some stoppages, however attributed most of those directly to magazines being pinned too tight. The new M10X milled Receiver is very nicely done with one of the smoothest AK/SIG550 actions in my collection of AK and SIG5XX pattern rifles. Only the SwissArms rifle has a smoother racking action than the M10X, so that is saying something. The Trigger take-up and break are likewise very good for an AK-pattern Fire Control System, although a shorter reset would be nice. Accuracy is on par with a good SKS, or reportedly better using GECO brand ammo (rather than Barnaul,, Norinco or surplus).

I appreciate the information I will deff take this into consideration as I havent heard much about the 181 yet.

There is no report that surplus ammo runs well in M+M M10.

You are mentioning that you like a rifle in 7.62x39 because it is cheaper. It is not, 223/556 is much cheaper in new manufactured ammo. Even the red Norinco is up there with 223/556.

I've heard mixed reviews about this one but I do like the overall look and design of it, im not to worried about really good accuracy cause if i wanted that id just get a bolty or something with a 308. that being said how do you find this with ruggedness, does it feel chinsy in anyway or does it seem pretty sturdy all around?

I’ve had a few T81s. All of them shoot reliably and can take a beating. Later models seem to have less issues with alignment. Tried and tested design over wheel re-invention and reliability first and foremost over MLOK slots for me. Can also be upgraded to a modern platform to hang a flashlight off.

Some users have noted needing higher power hammer springs to reliably fire rounds with harder primers.

The Gen 3 M10X is rock-solid. No rattle, no chintzy parts anywhere. It is a very rugged and solid rifle based on an excellent Longstroke Piston design, the SIG 550. Now that they have sorted out the reliability issues with the Gen 1 and 2, the Gen 3 runs like a top - at least my 12" does.

this is pretty cool and i like it, but how much does all the extras cost, not to mention the availability of parts for the t81 seems hard to come by but i could also be wrong
