Cross posted from red rifles with more questions.

Looking for a non restricted modern sporting rifle in 7.62x39. To me that means AR like controls, full upper rail for irons and optics. Modular in nature. Able to take AK or AR mags or similar quality.

I’ve had a VZ58 and tried to modernize it. Never got to the point I want.
T81 isn’t overly modern and not modular. Hate 180 degree safety throw.
M10X seems far from reliable, far too open action.
Current 180 pattern rifles mixed results too. Action too open.

Anything on the horizon for modern 7.62x39 rifles? Must be NR, budget isn’t primary concern, looking for options.

Alternatively if the ATRS Sporter goes NR again any particular bolt and barrel combos I should consider? Reading that a lot of bolt or extractors fail on the 7.62x39 AR rifles due to how much material is removed to make a 7.62x39 bolt head work.

Any details on the Maple Ridge barrel and bolt?

Are/were 18.6” barrel available that could shoot both .308” bullets and .311” bullets to cover spectrum of US made ammo to surplus ammo.

Thanks

True North Arms just introduced an upper for the WK with dust cover for the ejection port, with left side charging only. Not sure if the BCG obstructs the charging handle channel when the bolt is locked open, but it appears the channel is open with the bolt forward. You should be able build a complete rifle in 7.62x39 mm, with TNA being able to provide the required parts, including their new adjustable gas block.

The Jard J180 build kits just left the factory and are on their way to their Canadian distributor. They should hopefully clear the border and arrive soon :knocks on wood:, though that is subject to the whims of the postal deities. One of the bolt faces for the kits supports 7.62x39mm. The receiver has a sealed left side. On the left side, with the bolt forward, the BCG obstructs eject port and most of the charging handle channel, with the remaining portion of the channel being sealed by an optional dust cover. You will need to source the part outside the receiver, but the design uses direct gas impingement from a standard AR gas tube, so you can use any length of gas ported barrel, along with the appropriate gas tube length. It still uses a 180 recoil recovery system inside the receiver. Prior rifles from Jard have had issues, but the importer says they have tested it extensively for quality, and took the time to get an FRT approved and import the firearm in this regulatory climate, so we're crossing our fingers that this will be a reliable option.

SBI (Spectre Ballistic International of Sherwood Park, maker of the LPC manual action modular AR-ish firearm, Not Spectre LTD, manufacturer of the MCR), has recently released their svelte Lynx 180 lower, and are intending to create a matching upper. The design will soon be released, and will likely included a well sealed receiver, as that is one of the more common demands for an upgraded 180 rifle. They will also be producing their own direct gas impingement bolt control group, similar to the Jard, so you can chose to have a piston or DI 180 from them depending on how you configure it. They've highlight LPC builds using 7.62x39mm, so I have know doubt they will outline how to configure the firearm with that calibre. Looking forward to seeing their offering; the ETA is unknown, but hopefully before the end of summer or into early fall.

Within a week or so, TI will be releasing a side rail mount and alternate safety that will be required to use with the mount. You may want to examine that on its release to see if that changes your mind about the Type 81.

Good luck!
