Epps has a Rizzini in .30-06 for $4000...
TradeEx in Montréal usually has a bunch of Husqvarnas in various calibres, incl. 6.5x55. With a little work one of those might be nice if the budget is tight.

That is a very smart idea.Yes... I have one and it is very nice. Though I am thinking about having a 6.5x55 built on a stainless ruger M77 action with stainless barrel all put into a canoe paddle stock with wood inserts to replace it
6.5X55 Swede in a sporter
This past winter I found a Model98 Voere chambered in 6.5X55,with the swede twist of approx 1in7.8, made in Austria. Now this is a keeper. It's a great rifle with a trigger that is adjustable by changing springs, no creep breaks clean at whatever weight you want. Workmanship is second to non.

I have a Remington 700 Classic chambered in 6.5x55mm that I hold near and dear.
I had a Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55 that was the most accurate hunting weight rifle I ever owned, .75 MOA with Federal Classic ammo (the cheap stuff), but it was too beautiful to hunt with so after years in the safe...sold it to a board member here.
Love the cartridge, especially with Federal ammo.
+1............... had a Rem 700 Classic in 6.5x55mm up until last year. Safe queen. Sold it to a fellow board member who's been enjoying it ever since.
Previously had a Ruger 77 MkII in 6.5x55mm. Very accurate rifle. Sold on the board here. Still around some wheres I think.
Currently have a Tikka 695 stainless synthetic in 6.5x55mm.... a keeper.

I had the same itch for a modern bolt action 6.5x55 and scratched it with a Ruger 77 Mk ll but I would never want to entirely give up my M-96 and M-38 Swede mausers. As others have suggested, you can buy a Husqvarna 1600 from Tradeex at a reasonable price that will do just fine. Get one in very good to excellent condition and I think you'll find it is second to none.

Thanx for the info though, it would have bugged me for a long time until I figured out what that rifle was.
Just my 2 cents worth, but the 96 is more than adequate for the 6.5 inspite of it's age. I had the same dilemma, my son admired my Ruger #1 so I purchased him one and he is very happy to say the least. Perhaps you should get another 96 and you and him can have a "matched pair" of rifles at the camp or on the hunt, with no "one up ship" or perceived "hand me down" feelings on your son's part. The flip is of course that most times a son is pleased to get dad's old gun and cherishes it, so give him the rifle and get one the same for yourself. By the way it doesn't end, I have 3 grand kids and as money permits each will have a #1 / Mauser, but all basically the "same". --- John303
I see Tradeex has new 6.5x55 barrels for $95 if you want to build a new rifle-but my old swedes are doing the job very well as is as long as I hold it straight-and were doing it before I was born and will be doing it after I'm gone...

In addition to my Tikka 695 stainless synthetic sporter in 6.5x55mm I have 3 military Swedes. A M38 and two M96's.... love those old rifles!
And +1 if you want a sporter without breaking the bank I think the Trade-Ex rifles are the way to go...........

As per others said, if on a budget, watch out Trade Ex site.
They have / had several models and manufacturers, such as Lakelander, HVA/FFV/CG 1900 (FFV is also stamped Viking), Sabatti (Rover and M/90), Steyr Mannlicher, Krico, even a Browning A-Bolt. Don't forget the BSA CF-2 and my favourite the Husqvarna 1640. The HVA 640 made of the FN M/98 actions are great, too.
Once in a while they have older Sakos, and Tikkas, wich are a great buy, too.
You'd be really surprised of the softness of the HVA/FFV/CG 1900 actions.
They even list a M/98 custom for a real good price now.
As for new rifles, the Tikka T3 are definitely the best buy for now in that caliber, closely follwed by the Cz 550.
