Hey guys, I recently bought an Ubetti 1858 carbine in .44
I was at a buddies loading up some paper cartridges when he asked me if I wanna try some .45 acp bullets he bought instead of round balls. The balls are .454, the acp slugs are .453. The weight is 250 grains for the acp and it has a copper jacket. Now considering you can get heavy conical bullets and the size is not an issue my only concern is the copper. It is a modern uberti so I dont see an issue, but I'd figure I'd ask some more experienced shooters their thoughts. Any trips or tricks for a new BP shooter are welcome. Thanks guys!
Oh P.S I have both ffg and triple seven fffg for loading, but most of my loads have been 30 grains of ffg if that makes any difference.

Myself I don't think it's very wise loading a modern copper jacketed bullets to be propelled by black powder in a black powder firearm.
It might work a few times perhaps.
Do you really want a stuck bullet half way in your carbine barrel?
You have the internet. Educate yourself on marginal practices that the original manufacturer did not intend for this firearm to endure.

I think there are two major problems; the first is what is the diameter of your chamber and of the bore ? Even if you can get the bullet into the cylinder, I suspect the jacketed bullet would require a lot of crush to fit the barrel. The second problem is the rifling twist is probably too slow to stabilize the slug and it would tumble badly. Bottom line is stick with the ammunition that the gun was designed for

cheers mooncoon

Cheers and thanks boys, I figured it was a no go, but figured I'd ask anyways just for clarification. I'll stick to round balls till I get set up to make conicals.

I agree that using jacketed .45ACP bullets would definitely not be a good idea in any cap & ball firearm ...

However, for what it may be worth, quite a few years ago I tried some cast lead 200gr .45ACP bullets in my Ruger Old Army cap & ball revolver. They shot remarkably well ... might be worth a try for you ...

The ROA is a very special beast, mine was 452 all along and shot much better with ACP bullets than with LEE conicals yes.
That Uberti might have undersized chambers which do better with balls.
Also, eons ago I had a little book on various replicas. The authors were disappointed by their 1858 carbine. They had to use heavy loads in order to get the bullets out and the brass frame suffered from the stress.

The Ruger Old Army I've been shooting since March 3nd, 1986, shoots the same .457cal soft lead bullet or ball that it always did, cast from the dual mould I bought the day before with the gun, clearly marked '.457" - for Ruger Old Army'.
