Hello CGN,

I understand our glorious Canadian Rangers use the Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.I or a variant of it. What exact model is it, and when were they produced? Are they still being made? What kind of ammunition is given to be used with the rifle? Can a civilian purchase one of these mint rifles from the government, or if a person serves are you allowed to purchase the rifle from the government?

For the most part, the Canadian Rangers are using No.4 MK1* rifles mad by Long Branch between 1942 and 1950. They did purchase several from India And Pakistan some years ago. Ammo I think is standard MK7 ball ammo produced by IVI, the militaries main ammo contractor. Unfortunately no, the Canadian Government will not sell any firearm that are under ownership of the crown. (They are far too dangerous and every 60 year old rifle that is dewatted or scrapped saves ten babies, gotta think of the children.) I think the Rangers used to have the option of purchasing their rifle, but those days are long gone.

Well, that's a shame. A real shame. Canada could make a mint selling guns to it's own populace. I mean, it would mean the people would be armed, and wait, doesn't that mean harder to control and regulate.... hmmmm.... how unusual... something tells me Marx is rolling in his grave.

I might be wrong on this. I am sure Riflechair has more accurate details than myself.
The last time I "heard" of Canadian Rangers, being allowed to purchase thier issue rifles, was with the Winchester 30-30 carbines in 1963.
IIRC, these lever rifles were acquired during WW2 or thereabouts.

You jest, but it's true. I've had to lock up all my LEs' because the damn things would sneak out at night and shoot at innocent people on the street. LEs' are the worst for this sort of thing. If you get one, don't say you haven't be warned!

Win. PCMR Rifle.

At the wars end, serving rangers could purchase their issue rifles for the sum of $5. My father turned the offer down, as he preferred to use his 6.5x54 MS for putting meat on the table.

LE is indeed scary. It has a 10 round mag. That's twice the firepower of any black rifle out there.

I was only trying to establish the whys of it. IMHO, I think that if a man serves his country in any sort of military capacity, he should be able to purchase the arm he has been trained/qualified on. Else, how would we be able to raise an instant militia in times of need? Look at Switzerland for example. Almost every household has a gun, and they haven't been in a "war" since the 1800's! Personally, I believe that the Canadian government does not believe in it's people to defend thier country, no matter how ready we in fact are to do so. What happened to "O Canada, we stand on guard for ye?"

you havn't heard all the liebral and NDP spouting the "Canada was a nation of peacekeapers, untill those nasty Conservatives turned the army into a bunch of killers and warmongers"

the lefties don't want an army out there that might get in the way of their plans, let alone an armed populace.

*Shrugs lightly* I'm just waiting for our flag to change to being totally crimson in colour with a nice fat hammer and sickle. Or, in our case, a Canadian Club Whisky Bottle and a Maple Leaf. You know the only reason Japan never invaded America was becasue every household had a gun. Had they won in Alaska somehow, Canada might have been singing a very different tale.

No4 MkI, No4MkI*, No4Mk2;

Manufactured in Canada, Great Britain and Pakistan or FTRed (Factory Thorough Rebuild/Repair) and scrubbed of original markings in India...

From 1941-1961ish

LB No. 4 Mk. I* rifles. When these dired up, EALs were issued. Then LBs were bought on the surplus market. Then UK No. 4s were bought on the surplus market. Then No. 4 rifles were purchased in South Asia.
Ammunition was standard DI Mk. 7z ball until it was gone. Then Winchester Western commercial softpoint was purchased. This was followed by IVI ball and softpoint, special ordered. The ball is marked as Mk. 8, the softpoint is just headstamped IVI .303.

The Japanese did not invaDe the US because they simply did not have the resources to mount an across the Pacific invasion. A hit and run at Pearl Harbour, and temporarily holding Kiska and Attu were the limits of their capabilities. Along with doing a bit of shelling from submarines on the US and Canadian west coasts. And floating across some balloons.

Oh thats silly, we don't need to defend our country, the government can defend it for us. We just need to create a new department...
