Modern Canadian Ranger's Lee Enfield

I was only trying to establish the whys of it. IMHO, I think that if a man serves his country in any sort of military capacity, he should be able to purchase the arm he has been trained/qualified on. Else, how would we be able to raise an instant militia in times of need? Look at Switzerland for example. Almost every household has a gun, and they haven't been in a "war" since the 1800's! Personally, I believe that the Canadian government does not believe in it's people to defend thier country, no matter how ready we in fact are to do so. What happened to "O Canada, we stand on guard for ye?"

Their are those that would be absolutely thrilled to see the Canadian Forces Terminated. The NDP is one of them, they would rather we depend on the US to protect us then do it ourselves.

The ball is marked Mk 8Z, IVI, and a two digit year.

...and if you can get your hands on some, shoot it - it's beautiful and shoots to the correct point of aim for the sights. Any idea what the powder is in that ammo (or it's commercial equivalent) it's really clean stuff (or it was in '97) :D

Not in my experience, it's not. It's all over hell and does not match the sight regulation.

Interesting. I have some Mk.VIII from way back for the Vickers I believe. I've had mixed reports, some say it's safe to shoot in an Enfield, others say it's not because it's loaded "hotter" to compensate for the automatic action. Truth?

Admittedly the 'sample' I had was small and older than what you have shown (and I don't have the access you have to different batches), but it was dead on out to 300 yards in my No4 MkII. Mind you, that is a virtually new rifle which probably helped.

The IVI production ammunition procured for the rangers is of outstanding quality. The 1992 lot is an exception however. This ammunition was loaded utilizing primers of different specifications. When you open a sealed box you might have two or three rounds with different coloured primers.

Not a big deal when you're shooting at 100 metres but in competition at 400 or 500 metres you're hitting the V-Bull one second and the burm the next. I've had spotters comment on the different noise signature of one round after another. Additionally I've physically felt high variability in recoil with this year of manufacture. Some rounds are very HOT and others very light.

Other than the IVI 92 lot they have made absolutely fabulous ammunition in my experience.

Sight regulation is variable from one lot to another. Stevo is correct.
This however is almost always the case between lots to one degree or another with the exception of perhaps match quality ammunition such as the 168gr 308 Winchester Federal Gold Match.

Ah yess the EAL. the rangers are not military so they don't need no EVIL military rifles.
We'll issue them these nice "sportin rifles" Said rifles that couldn't stand up to the rigors of ranger use, we'll reissue No4's again. OOPS we got rid of the No4's! Solution buy them back from the surplus dealers we sold them to. Of course for more money then they were surplused out for!

Mk7z
MV2440fps
Bullet weight 174 gr flat base
Mk8z
MV 2550fps
Bullet weight 175gr boat tail

Not really much difference except in the design of the bullet which gave greater range because of that.

Not to mention Mk8z was authorized for rifles in cases where muzzle flash could be a factor.

The real reason Mk8z was mainly for machine guns was because of the throat erosion caused by cordite in rifles made a boat tailed bullet less accurate.
Machine guns were NOT to be fired with Mk8z if previously used with Mk7 cordite. You can change a machine gun barrel in a minute or two.

you havn't heard all the liebral and NDP spouting the "Canada was a nation of peacekeapers, untill those nasty Conservatives turned the army into a bunch of killers and warmongers"

the lefties don't want an army out there that might get in the way of their plans, let alone an armed populace.

Here is the Liberal history of "peacemaking".

# In the general election of 1935 the Liberals won a majority government. Mackenzie King was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada, again.

# Canada declared war on Germany in 1939.

# The Liberals won another majority government in 1940.

The Liberals won the majority in 1940 because all the conservative voters were in Europe or North Africa making sure the Liberals in Canada would not have to learn German....

John, have you ever worked for the Canadian Government - I only ask because it seems you have insider knowledge of the "thought" process, you might need a security clearance :D

Riflechair are you using the FMJ or soft point

Both are utilized
174gr FMJBT for competition
180gr RN soft point in the bush

There is a 2" to 3" change in POI at 100m

Both ammunition formulations are of excellent quality

Oh and JS
Cdn Rangers are a sub-component of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve.
We are military but we are not combat soldiers - domestic operations only.
We do not hold rank en-par with the primary reserve or regular forces but we do utilize rank equivalents for wage purposes of:
1. PVT (Ranger)
2. CPL (Section Commander)
3. MCPL (Patrol Second in Command)
4. SGT (Patrol Commander)

We salute officers
We follow the chain of command
We utilize NATO Orders Format
We are bound by military law
We are scouts for the Cdn Armed Forces should they need to operate in our AOR
We help to provide our commanders with situational awareness that they would otherwise not have
We are normal folks and don't stand out in a crowd
We are not well known
We are passionately Canadian, and;
We are proud to be associated with Canada's men and women in uniform.

And you ELECT your officers, so they had best know their job or else;)
Yes, you are bound by military law and all the rest, but da politicians wouldn't issue you SLR's, so they must not think you are military enough even though you perform that function. That was why I said that. I was NOT putting down the Rangers. I am familiar with the function of the rangers.
Even have both versions of the EAL;)

Good to see this thread having alot of activity. What are the requirements to join the Canadian Rangers? I've considered it as an alternative to full active service.

Im trying to become a Ranger right now best thing you can do Drachenblut is goto the Canadian Forces website and it links you from there to the Rangers area which explains the history and requirement of becoming a Ranger. The patrol that im trying to join has a recruit on a probation period from 4 to 6 months then they vote on wether your in or out based on participation and how well you work them as a group. Its alot of fun.
