Modern Sporter and SLR side by side

Nice MS Colt! Anyone have any ideas on parts to build that? I saw a Stag15 upper kit on arms east. Would that be compliant with the ATRS lower? Or would everything have to be stripped from the Stag15 upper and assembled onto the ATRS upper?

Stripped. You can use the parts, not the upper.
The SLR and MS are not compatible with AR uppers or lowers.

SLR is just the designation given by MDI to their reciever set design. No meaning publicly stated that I know of but I would pressume your acronym to be correct.

The MS is the acronym for ATRS' Modern Sporter reciever set design.

Neither are by definition an AR rifle (so both NR with an appropriate barrel length), however both use AR parts, and both function and operate identical to an AR in all respects except with regards to how they take down for maintenance etc. MDI SLR uses a screw like a 10/22, the MS uses a single forward takedown pin. Both reciever set designs are proprietary to themselves but use all other standard AR parts to complete them.

My 10/22 uses a screw to remove the stock from the receiver, nothing like an SLR.

No way someone with 15000 posts knows so little about an AR and the non restricted options available. That many posts and he can't scroll through page one of this forum to find all the answers he's looking for.

I am aware that the screw on a 10/22 is only for the stock, but the location is similar and on both the 10/22 and the SLR it is required for takedown.

I felt the same about the post history, but that said perhaps steve has had no interest in AR's due to their long standing status. I felt much the same and had no knowledge of AR /AR like rifles until I got my MH.

onetwentyish, I see now- neither of those rifles are AR's, and the MS isn't a "modern sporting rifle", aka AR15.

Consider me a walking example of "you don't know what you don't know".

Thanks for educating me.

cr5- I'm an old school bolt action 30 cal kinda old fart, and only got my first semi-auto (an M305) a few years back. I hadn't considered getting an AR because I foolishly considered them "wimpy" and besides, I didn't want a restricted rifle. Even though I have 4 handguns, so not new to restricted.

But as I said elsewhere, I tried out a reduced load on the M305, and suddenly I realized I wasn't missing the shoulder pounding. I'm not a big guy, and while I used to enjoy the solid kick of a .303 or .308, it was a treat not to feel that every shot. My brother bought a Norinco CQ, and really liked it... and the Libs were making noises about "assault rifles"... and I decided to get one while I could. So I bought a DPMS Oracle, through which I've shot exactly 50rds. So far. I really like this rifle, but yes- I'm a total newbie to AR's.

Sorry for the hijack.

Anyone liking the retro build who doesn't care about every part being Colt should give the guys at Tier One Armoury in Edmonton a call. I was in there yesterday and they had triangular forends and everything else AR related.
Don't bother looking on the website, just call them and ask.

For people who want the triangle M16a1 & earlier look, brownells makes reproduction parts. Pistol grips, buttstocks, handguards, duck bill flash hiders, flat slip rings & chrome bolt carriers with or with out the forward assist serations. Then you just have to source a barrel of your choosing. Like a Green Mountain M16a1 profile barrel with 1:12 twist and chrome lined.

Personally I feel both are equal which makes either one a good choice for a NR-restricted black gun. They both have their strengths and faults.

The Brownells furniture isn't bad. This rifle's getting stripped for parts as soon as my second Sporter receiver set arrives.

What are the faults of the MS?

I am of the mind for having a very tight fitting upper and lower receiver set. This particular set is not as I like, but it’s not sloppy like some warn out ARs I have owned. Please understand it’s not a deal breaker it’s just me. Secondly the bolt release void on the upper needs to be machined larger as it can hinder loading with cold weather gloves. This is a Hunting rig, no?

The bolt release area was opened up significantly on lowers after a certain point. Around #150 IIRC.
Is there any chance the front TD pin is the source of the "slop"? I had custom pins made for mine and it is quite tight now as in NO wiggle at all. Mine IS certainly a hunting rig. Now that the nasty cold has gone at least for a bit I can see how it shoots.
