Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

Geissele Mk14 finally installed, but there's a sizeable gap between the rail and the receiver, just shy of 1/16", so the gas tube is visible through the gap.

Everything sits perfectly flush until I thread the cross bolts through, so it's due to the interaction of nut and receiver threads. I've uninstalled, seasoned the threads and taken it a little past torque spec, but the gap remains.

Anyone else have a 1st run FA upper? How's your hand guard fit?

Any guesses as to which part is the out of spec one?

I’ve fit 2 of these mk14 handguards and both have gaps. I actually prefer more gaps so if I mount my optics at the most forward position on my receiver, it won’t touch the handguard. But that’s just me.

For a first build, does anyone think it is possible to spend under $1000 for parts after purchasing upper/lower sporter?

Yes.

However it totally depends on the quality of parts you want , if you have the proper tools to assemble and if you are ok with waiting for sales or buying the odd used part.
I picked up a few used parts and a few new ones. Built my Sporter for around $2200 including receiver cost.

For a first time builder, is there a guide on parts required?

I’m a first time builder as well and I just did a bunch of research on parts before I spent any money, unfortunately I wasn’t able to keep the cost of my parts under 1000 but I was pretty close got some good deals on here in the EE

Lower parts kit
Barrel
Gas tube
Gas block
Handguard
Muzzle device
Bolt carrier group
Buffer tube kit
Stock
Grip
Magazine
Charging handle

I think i got it all. Also if you're doing a modern sporter a clamshell type upper vise block doesn't fit, get the reaction rod type that inserts into the barrel for tightening barrl, you'll also need some punches, a bench vise, AR armourers tool ideally.

Trying to keep parts under $1000 is pretty unrealistic unless you get a PSA 20in A2 Rifle from IRG as a doner rifle...

So $1000 in parts plus $2400 for a receiver set on the EE if you are lucky enough to get it in the first 5 mins of being posted... too bad the supply is dramatically under the demand these are amazing rifles.

I might be missing something here. Receivers are only like $1200 after tax. Are you just saying that it's either wait for one from ATRS OR spend Double in the EE? If you want a cheaper Modern Sporter, waiting seems like the way to go.

I am thinking about getting one and am deff looking for a cheaper way to do it. So many people on here have $4.5k MS and I never understood it, but then again I am more a "spend less on the gun more on ammo and practice" kinda guy.

Edit: And now I can never post again because I am 13 years old and I don't wanna ruin my post count.

Hi all this is my first build and so far the lower went together no problem except the bolt catch retaining pin doesn’t want to go flush in the hole am I using the wrong pin or is this common?

You can build them for around 2K. Mine have been 3500-5500$ without optics and all payed regular price. Just depends on what you want in a build.

NICE!

I think most people, me included, spent 4-5k on these because of the long wait and the ability to spread out that cost. I have a couple and I waited for sales like on the 4th of July, Labor Day, Black Friday etc. In all, I think I saved about 15-25% on all other parts besides the receiver set. My lowers are the exact same except for triggers

I’m under $1000 on top of the receivers with all new parts except the hand guard was used. Includes a hiperfire trigger

DPMS LPK for $50
Toolcraft bcg $180
Trigger $180
MRA barrel (blem sale) $200
MRA Gas block/tube $95
MRA brake $80
7075 buffer tube assembly $8
Magpul stock $30 off the EE
Picked up a beat up MRA handguard for a hundo off the EE.

I’m sure if I went more used and it could have been cheaper

I'm not sure how well this will work... but you can try it, I copy and pasted what I've got offline in an Excel sheet for plotting builds into a google spreadsheet. MS Builder Sheet

I dont know if I want to detail it all out for my friend in Canmore`s build. Its a quality build with not much skimping and its getting up there for sure.

If said friends wife saw the final figure on such a list she would probably have something (unpleasant) to say........

Intention was to have it available for people to print off, fill in by hand, and then store near the shredder. ;-)
