Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

SLR = $1000 receiver set
ATRS = $500 lower, and you decide your upper (slick side or FA)
Slick side = $485
Forward assist = $600ish I think?

Better of the 2... I haven’t handled either, but I’m willing to by bet my left nut, ATRS.

Macabee had a ton of problems at the beginning, and were not forthcoming with the information. They actually purposefully led on incorrect timeframes, came up with unacceptable solutions (cerakote vs anodize), etc.

It appears some bugs have been worked out, but some still exist.

ATRS has been fully upfront on any issues they’ve encountered. And admittedly the first batch will have some minor issues with buffer tubes, but a few solutions were offered.

So you would bet your left nut on two pieces of hardware you have even touched or had first hand experience with? Wow I hope you don’t do that with everything in your life because you will eventually have to sit down to pee.

With the track record of ATRS, and the Modern Varmint that i owned, i would bet both my nuts this will blow the SLR out of the water in terms of quality, fit, and finish.

I do on sure things.

Thanks for worrying about me. There’s always a punchers chance that the SLR is better, and ATRS dropped the ball completely, don’t get me wrong.

But proven track records will say otherwise. Did you have a helping hand in the SLR design, is that why you’re bitter it sucks?

Who care's which is better? Either sell it or don't buy it if you don't like one or the other.

Back to what this thread is for now.
I now have all the parts for one of the two MS builds I'm excited about.
MRA 18.6 pencil barrel .223 wylde (Black) only using a thread protector
MRA V1 15" hand guard
Superlative Arms adjustable gas black
V7 Titanium ambi safety selector/bolt catch/ mag release/ castle nut/ QD endplate (all black)
BCM gunfighter grip mod-2 (black)
Raptor SL charging handle (black)
Daniel defensecollapsible butstock (black)
Geissele rapid fire trigger
Brownells lightweight BCG TiN
3oz buffer with chrome silicon spring

Everything is black except for the BCG. I'll be getting the receiver/handguard/and buffer tube cerekoted with a semi gloss black.
Will be putting a Nikon Blackforce 1000 1-4x24 mounted on a nightforce 20MOA unimount (currently rides on my SLR. great scope for the money)

MRA 18.6 pencil barrel .223 wylde (Black)

Curious about the actual weight of this barrel.

Website says 1lb 9oz. Mine was shipped monday due to the backorder when I bought it during their christmas sale. When I get it I'll put it on the scale and let you know.
Mine weighed 26.0 oz. I'd be curious if there is some variation with yours once you weigh it.

Mine was a little heavier than advertised I wanna say 1lb 10oz. And I also had to send it back because the flared profile on muzzle end was the same diameter as the gas journal and my gas block would not slide over it the tolerance was to tight and the beed blasted finish added a drag factor, I was gonna heat up the gas block to get it on but that’s a one way trip and I was thinking about coating the barrel. Anyway MRA has been pretty good about the whole deal, but I’m a little disappointed it didn’t work the first time and there turn around has been a little slow as I sent it back in the beginning of December and they haven’t fixed it yet.

If you saw how thin the profile is you'd see why lol.

I'm interested to seeing how accurate it will be. No reports or reviews on MRA's pencil barrels from what I could find.
My experience with pencil barrels is that the first two shots are Sub MOA, after that they open up:)

No worries for a hunting rig , but if you plan on doing any target shooting for tiny groups, you’re gonna spend way to much timeWaiting for the barrel to cool down.

Thought I’d post some useless info, because I’m bored ha ha

I just assembled all my MS parts on a stag U/L.
CA CFW 20 inch barrel
True north brake( it works really welll).
BAD ridge line 15 inch handguard
Geiselle HSNM trigger
Maritime bolt catch
Brownells BCG
Brownells buffer tube assembly
Brownells butt stock
Raptor ambi CH

Total weight 6.2 lbs.

I’m going to change the Brownells aluminum butt stock for a CTR.
Should knock a few ounces off :)

Now I gotta switch it all back

Those will be nice rifles. August can't come fast enough.

I bought two complete receviers as well. Haven't decided on the second build yet, but the 7.62x39 is putting ideas in my head.

Since it seems to be the theme, I'll continue. Here's my MS part list list now that the last few parts have been ordered:

Upper: Slickside
- BSF 18.6 carbon fiber barrel
- Cobalt Kinetics Pro muzzle brake
- Superlative bleed off stainless gas block with black nitride gas tube
- Brigand Blade 15" carbon fiber handguard
- Raptor LT charge handle
- Brownells TiN lightweight BCG
- Nikon M-223 1.5-6x24 scope in a Nikon Black MSR 30mm mount and 3D printed throw lever
- Nikon P Tactical Spur micro red dot on a 45 degree (3GN open division backup sight)

Lower:
- Timney Calvin Elite trigger
- Cobalt Kinetics Pro buffer system
- Cobalt Kinetics Pro configurable buttstock
- KNS trigger pins
- Odin works XMR3 mag release
- Elftmann stainless speed safety
- ATI scorpion X2 pistol grip
- 3D printed magwell flare done by myself

Rifle will have a black and red theme to match my current guns and gear setup, but I'm in the second run so I'll have to continue to enjoy my ar15 for some time yet haha, no long range practice at my buddies farm.
