Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

Does anyone know the weight of a stripped MS upper/lower? I'm estimating 17oz (485g) based on an average sample of a few FA AR receivers. That puts my projected weight at 5.8lbs before optics and mag.

You are a bit under weight there. The lower in my possession weighs 289.9g or 10.23oz & the prototype slick side upper I weighed was 270.2g or 9.53oz.

I already factored the weight of the plunger, spring, and pin. I'll weigh it when it arrives, but I bet whatever weight is added for the FA housing is mostly offset by the hole. Even with a 20oz receiver set I'm looking at 5.96lbs. Not too shabby.

F/A upper, midlength gas system 18.6 barrel

What is it with peoples fascination with the weight? I have this image of a pale fat guy wheezing, sweating, explaining how he shaved a lb off his rifle by adding $1000 of extra Titanium parts.

Because they can! funny how you magically think its a fat guy instead of someone that likes to go out for a week in the bush with a rucksack. and im sorry to tell you but 1K is chump change in this sport.

I'm in my 50s with no kids and no debt. This is the least expensive hobby I have. Haha.

That also means I'm old enough to realize it's always a good idea to reduce the amount of weight you have to carry at any time for any reason.

Im 10%BF and I obsess about weight! HAve you ever handled a 5 lb with optic AR15??? You'll never go back. Also my girls need it.
Much thanks to you guys posting detailed weights!

Going to steal my timney from my stag until I get another one or a trigger tech.

If I come in under 10 pounds I'll be happy. I dont really care as I like a heavier rifle. Most of my shooting involves a bench or some sort of platform

I catch s#!+ all the time because I like long heavy profile barrels. If I could have found a 26" inch barrel with a .936 gas block journal and 875 muzzle I would have bought it. Might steal the prs off the stag for a bit for my Ms setup. Probably going to run a 8-32x56 sightron on it for a while too. Gotta do load development and a 1-6 doesnt give the ame amount of precision at 400 as an 8-32 does.

Light is fast, and fast is smooth. I didn't have the budget to go full-house on this build with carbon barrel etc but after packing heavy rifles through deep snow in search of ole wily 6.4-6.5lbs is going to feel like a featherweight.

And now my inevitable question, to which I'm not sure its been answered all ready. Was there ever a consideration for an "enlightened" lightweight billet receiver set? Like the V7 or B.A.D., theyre coming in at 12.6 oz, almost half a pound lighter! Strength? Cost? If its programmed and in the cnc what's the dif?

Niche one off that requires extra coding on the cnc = way higher costs that only a few want to pay. Not worth it probably. That and reliability of the reciever would be compromised.

Could still take the reciever to any machine shop and get them to mill it out for you to save 6 oz

I highly doubt that, Ive read alot and no one has seen any reliability issues as a civy. MAybe its to copy milspec dimensions? I hate milspec, I mean i get it for things to fit and be standardized, I'm not in the military, nor will this rifle, I like lighter and better :)

LOL, not a chance, I'm a weight weenie for sure, not dumb

I don't know about you but I would NOT want to experience a catastrophic failure with something like this beside my face.
No not that!!! Within reason, like the V7. 1/2 a pound IS a big deal on just a receiver set. But if it is considered to be reliable to the manufacturer here, any oz shaved would be gladly appreciated. I do think i remember Rick commenting on this though, Just want to push the boundaries without being stupid
