Modern Varmint in 6.5 Grendel MAY 11 UPDATE

We would like to see better support, and a bit of an established history for the cartridge prior to considering it.

If they aren't doing 762x39, I sincerely doubt they'll do one in a brand new cartridge that no one has yet.

Magazines are 6.8 SPC and the cartridge is illegal in parts of Ontario. Great round for sure tho.

It's kind of risky, but could be an incredible varmint round for this platform, seems like a lot of people buy them with that POU in mind. It's kind of a trade off though, either you wait until it becomes prolific and have just another offering or be the only shop around making a platform for the hot new cartridge, similar to 6.5 Grendel, selling that chambering gives them pretty much the whole market for that cartridge in a semi auto non restricted. If they did the same with 22 nosler they would literally be the only company offering that option up here. But if it flys by night and never becomes prolific it's could be a loss. Just a thought I had (I have lots, some are great!, some not so much lol), I understand their hesitance to adopt a widely unproven and unavailable new chambering and respect their decision to hold off. Just seems like it could have a lot of potential... someday.

How can the cartridge be illegal? Or do you just mean for the purpose of hunting it is illegal? Kinda like how we can't hunt big game in Alberta with a .22cal even if it's a 22-250, the cartridge isn't illegal but hunting big game with it is prohibited.

I sold an XCR in 6.8 and the guy told me he would have to switch to calibre for hunting coyotes out east I think, restricted to .224 or smaller, something like that.

I have been tempted as well, but I would have to sell my beloved RFB to pull it off right now, sure would look nice beside the Hunter in the safe though, would definitely have all the bases covered with those 2.
 
The cartridge is not banned in Ontario, the only regulation is below or south of the Severn river max caliber is.270 0r 6.858 mm now there are shotgun or muzzleloaders only areas as well!
just look it up in Regs.

The regs state that in southern Ontario, (below the French and Mattewa rivers) any caliber larger than .275" may not be usd for hunting small game. A .270 or 6.8spc is .277", therefore not legal to hunt small game in southern Ontario.
 
You are wrong on your rivers because in Muskoka 53 and 53A you can use 270 and up Small game is .22 but deer and coyotes south of Severn can be hunted win max .270 .
You can not hunt small game grouse squrlles etc with anything bigger than .22 rim fire anywhere in province!

I better read some of the regs online myself ,could not find the Severn River reg the regs the Ministry are a little hard to grasp now but one is new now there are a bunch of county's from Lambton to Niagara north to Peel Durham and east that allow small game to be taken with .275 if you know these areas you would scratch your heads!
Individuals should check!
But 6.8 is legal for any large game or wolves coyote or ground hogs coons at night 22 rim fire

Yeah. Me too. Been lusting after it too/6.5 mm something in-general. But the Grendel has the lead. Sadly since having 3 kids in last 5 years losing my gunnut status ..... been replaced by fishing and beer ��. Haven't even handloaded something in like ... idk. Forever

Yup, best you read those regs!!!! They are confusing and what you can do is implied more often than it is stated. They tell you what you can't do although the published regs are an abridged version with the final word spelled out in legislation.

In any event, southern Ontario is defined as any area south of the French and Mattawa river. There is nothing in the regs that state you can't hunt small game with a caliber larger than .275" in northern Ontario but why anyone might do so is a different discussion. They do talk about big game open seasons and types of firearms to be used. You can bet that if you're hunting grouse waaay up north with ole Betsy .30-06 during moose season and you don't have a valid moose license, Mr Green Jeans will give you a hefty fine and probably confiscate your gun.

Anyhow, not trying to be a smart ass or mess with you. Indeed, I whole heartedly agree with your advice that anyone planning to hunt an area should read the regs. They are somewhat convoluted and have some notable exceptions and loopholes specific to particular WMUs.

Wellllll It is funny you ask due to the timing. We got 1 of the new Timney C.E. triggers in about 2 weeks ago and put it into our 6.5 Grendel chambered Modern Varmint rifle.
Brilliant is all I can say!!:d So far after just over 500 rounds, not a hiccup shooting the Hornady Custom or Black ammo. We had the gun out to the Milo PRS match this weekend and it proved to be a contender.
We will be ordering more of these triggers and will be offering them as yet 1 more option to the list.:dancingbanana:
