Modified a 30 round mag to work in my bolt action .22.

First off, this is one of those... "Just 'cause I can" type of projects I took on. I have always liked the idea of high capacity bolt actions for some reason, but they always seem to be limited to 10 or less, regardless of what is out there.

I checked in Legalise before I did this, and due to the fact that the donor mag is good to go, the final product is a bolt action mag, and rimfire mags are not controlled items, it would be 100% legal.

I have a little Norinco backpacker that I enjoy shooting, and the 5 round mag and even the 10 rounders were a bit of a pain for me.

I decided to solve my urges to tinker, locked myself in my shop, and devised a solution.

Allow me to introduce the Kevin M. one of a kind special 30 cartridge bolt action rimfire magazine.

Function tests have run flawlessly after a bit of carful filing on the inside of the magazine to smooth any excess superglue with jewlers files, and some prior work on the mini-mill to do the bulk of the precision work.

The rifle with the 10 round polymer magazine.

The magazines, from left to right; Factory 5 cartridge metal magazine, aftermarket 10 round polymer magazine, 30 cartridge Remington 597 bananna magazine, for which a clear version was the donor for the project.

The finished magazine next to a 10 rounder and a stock 597 mag.

The feed angle is near perfect, within about a 1/2 degree or so of the factory magazines.

Goes to show when I get off my butt I can do some things that are interesting. :)

Wow, just might have to hack up one of mine and try it on my savage.
It's silly that the bolt actions max at 10 rounds. 25+ rounds, here I come.....
Thanks for the idea!!!!!!!

How are the 2 held together?

Two stages. Superglue for direct plastic contact, and epoxy for support on the outside.

Was not sure if it would be strong enough to hold the pressure of the spring, but so far so good, it seems really strong.

Some more testing will tell it it will hold long term or will blow up on me, forcing more tinkering. ;)

PS... that may or may not include the handymans secret weapon...... Duct tape.

;)

Update.

Took it out shooting in the bush for the weekend.

I put 900 cartridges through the magazine without problem, minus one brand of cheap bulk wax coated ammo that stuck for the first two rounds when it got really cold. (-15 celcius)

Other then that, it fed 100%, and the thing is such a giggle to shoot. You really get fast on the bolt learning to rapid fire 30 rounds from a bolt action at a 100 meter target. :50cal:

I loved it, and I am going to try and make a few more up out of my other 10 rounders. Just good clean fun.

Nice work!

One suggestion; reinforce the joint with Mighty Putty. The stuff cures up as hard as plastic and holds like a bastard. I used it to fix a rear-view mirror in my old car and it put up with all kinds of torquing and abuse, never let go.

I was interested in those as well, but the high price and the lack of short barrels kept me away.

For Ruger I will stick to my 10/22, unless they start coming out with more accessories, lower pricing, and short barrels for the 77/22.

Just my .02 on that issue though.
