I have a Winchester 30-06 stainless sporter with control feed I haven't used in years. I have changed my mind on a purchase of a 257 weatherby mag. And was wondering if modifying the 30-06 to 25-06 was a cost effective, and accuracy improved way of gaining a 25 caliber rifle. I do have a 30 caliber magnum. So I don't need the 30-06 any more. Can just the SS barrel be replaced for this modification? What might be a reasonable cost, type of barrel. And perhaps a recommended Gun smith in the Calgary area.

Thanks
Steve

Your conversion is as simple as you think. Unscrew the .30 cal barrel, replace with a .25 cal one with a properly cut chamber, check and if necessary adjust headspace.

You're looking at the cost of a barrel, plus the gunsmsith's time to set it up properly.

Depending upon the quality of the barrel, likely $400 minimum to rebarrel it, but probably in the $500-$700 range.

Not necessarily a cost effective means to adding a .25 cal to your arsenal, as the gun will not be worth the sum of its present value plus the cost of the work done to it. It's value on the used market will change very little, but the amount you have tied up in it will increase. It is likely cheaper to sell the rifle as is, and buy a .25 cal. It's less work and will be faster as well.

A very nice replacement barrel could be a Shilen Chrome moly match grade barrel. PM me for costs and availability.

Gunsmiths charge anywhere from $150 to 300 for the install. There are some very good smiths on this board.

It is a simple process. As was said, not necessarily cost effective but many change barrels to either improve performance or shoot a new chambering on an old friend.

Done all the time.

Forsure its cheaper to sell the 30-06 of the EE here and buy another 25-06 I seen one the other day go by from Double Gun not sure if its still around but it was a unfired Remington 700 25-06 with a aftermarket Bell and Carlson stock for 7 and change I think. But if you are really fond of your 30-06 and don't mind paying the extra I would go the way of getting it rebarrel you will be sure to have a higher grade of barrel forsure.

just my 2 cents

Thanx for the information. I see the cost to re barrel will be as much or close to the cost of a new rifle. But I may end up with a more accurate and higher quality rifle if I go with the new barrel. I will do some more research on barrel replacement cost.

I'd be more inclined to go to 6.5-06 for a better selection of bullets; but I'll definitely vote for the new barrel.
You get great quality if you choose something like Shilen, Kreiger, Smith or Gaillard.
You get to choose the contour, twist rate and length you want (personally I like longer, heavier barrels, and just put up with the limitations).
