This might seem like a silly modification but I'd like to try it:
Would it be possible for a good smith or anyone with great skill to modify a Ruger 77MKII in .223 to accept detachable AR15 mags? The reason why I ask is I find the floor plate system to be a PITA to load/unload.

I like the floor plate on my Ruger, not sure what problem you are having. The fact that when I have the rifle with me, I have the WHOLE rifle and not having to worry about forgetting a mag is why I love that system.

Robar stateside used to modify Ruger 77s for M14 mags in 308. Maybe he does 223 mods. I'm not sure how the 5 round limit would effect you here. I believe that you would be legally bound to only 5 as the magazine was originally designed for the AR/M16 family, and that's how it would be classified by the government. - dan
