Been tired of the way my short barreled 10/22 was configured in its MP5 lookalike setup, so was looking for other ideas, in particular on RFC.
After perusing some of the 10/22 stock projects in the "Tribute to Hipshot" and "Hipshot Compendium" threads I decided to give it a shot. I wanted something simple/minimalist and lightweight. What I have now isn't exactly what I want, but the beauty of it is, I can begin all over again when I know what I want.
First step is to trim the extra material on the forestock off for the 9" barrel.
Then open up the channel for the heavier barrel
Gotta have a rail,
right?
Had a MOE rail section from another project that never happened so marked out where I wanted it placed.
Ends up fitting here at the height that the Magpul XTM hand stop kit will blend into the rest of the stock.
Then I needed to fabricate a mounting system for the pistol grip, found a piece of 3/8" hard poly so took some measures and began cutting.
Got the shape I wanted, next need to tap it for the mounting bolt and drill some holes to mount it to the stock.
And now to mount it on the stock that was trimmed to allow it to fit. I was annoyed that the screws heads didn't match up but then it gets covered in Bondo so who cares I guess.
Next need to trim some more of the original wood away so I remove the pistol grip adapter and try to get a straight profile back to the butt.
Then put the pistol grip adapter in place and add some Bondo to get the profile that I want.
After I give it a coat of black spray on bed liner its ready to go play.
Still a few final touches to do on it, need a crush washer for the flash hider for one thing. Also want to add a sling mount system but not decided on the type I want yet (single point or traditional). Also plan to do a bedding job and at the same time possibly making a "magazine cut out" and thinning out the stock ahead of the magazine. (Basically making the profile the same height as the XTM panel all the way back to the mag cut out). Maybe even skeletonize the rear stock portion to save a couple of ounces.
But for now I have a fun little plinker to play with.
