Has anyone had a forcing cone lengthened on an 870 12g? And if so, what is the cost to have it done?

Been doing some reading on how to reduce felt recoil and came across a few articles on having the forcing cone extended and machined to a more gentle taper(for lack of a better term). Seems like it is mostly done for improved patterns and less shot deformation, but one of the benefits that some have mentioned is a reduction in the felt recoil (makes it feel more like a push than a hit).

I have a surgically repaired rotator cuff, and clay shooting (plus developing loads in rifles) has become a little more uncomfortable over the last few years, so would like to know if this is a worthwhile option.

I have already installed a Limbsaver pad and gone to lighter loads, which has helped, but would like to see if I can do more. Also, buying a new gun is not an option right now, so trying to do the best with what I have.

Cannot give you a price since the last one I had done on a 870 was in the 70's. We did it on all the trap guns to improve patterns which it did by reducing the number of damaged pellets , thus less flyers.
On the recoil the experts will say it is no different based on phyics but it definately is a different more pleasing impact to your shoulder.
This may help also

Update here is what epps charges per their site. Dam I paid more than that in 1970
Forcing cone removal: $65.00/bbl

Have you consider getting your own reamer and do it yourself and re-sell the reamer after you have done yours and may be a buddy or two?

The reamer itself is may be around $100 plus or minus.

Also, I have done mine many years ago and it does in fact improved the pattern however I did not notice any reduction in felt recoil.

If you are after more in recoil reduction you might want to consider replace your 870 to a more comfortable shooting gas operate semi or add a recoil reduce (or both) or even go further having the barrel ported because the lengthen forcing did not reduce felt recoil (at least in my case) and if your barrel is chrome lined ( 870 is not ) the cost to have it reamed will be much higher due to the extra work involved.

There are more cost effective ways to reduce recoil with your shotgun, lengthening forcing cones would be the last thing I would do to reduce recoil. 1) reduce loads by going to a lighter shot weight and/or velo./powder charge, this may require slightly more expensive ammo. 2) increase gun weight and/or install mercury recoil reducer. 3) get a gas op. semi. and make the above changes.

X2 But if your looking to improve the pattern it is well worth it.
