What is the process for altering a larger capacity magazine so that it conforms to the ten-round maximum? Is this a DIY project or must it be done professionally and if so at approximately what cost?

I don't think smiths will do it because it is illegal to be in possession of said magazines. They must be permanently pinned/rivetted (by you) so that the maximum allowable capacity cannot be exceeded.

IIRC, if the magazine is in pieces or disassembled, it does not count as a prohibited device, just a suggestion.

PS. I was at a shop the other week when someone tried to have the gunsmith there alter some high cap magazines.....they refused to do it.

You can do it yourself. The Criminal Code covers what needs to be done. It doesn't apply to Lee-Enfield mags.

"a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;
(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or
(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue."

X2 on the ten rounder. If it's semi auto, you can only have 5 in der buddy. But depending on what kind of mag, a simple aluminum rivit in the side of the mag will probably do it. Thats how all of my AR mags have come pinned.

could be a PISTOL MAG- i had to alter all of my beretta mags way back when- attached a plug to the legs on the follower so the follower would only depress to 10 rounds

Modifying Mags UPDATE

Perhaps I should have been more specific. I have a Sig X-Five. 10-round Mags are hard to find and expensive. I have access to higher-capacity mags at a significantly lower cost. Since my first post, I have found a smith that will modify 12's and 14's for me. My model of X-five did not have the extended and flared mag well. However I have upgraded the pistol with a flared extender and with aluminum mag extenders that will fill the flared grip in the same way as with other X-Fives. I also bought Nill grips with the built in extension. However the mag extenders which I wanted more for appearance reasons also add a two round capacity to the original mag. So this is why I need work to remain legal and still have the appearance I want. Hi Cap mags complete with the aluminum extension are much easier to find and cheaper. So I will engage this "Smith" to plug and pin which he assures me he can do properly and legally. Until they are made legal, I will keep the larger mags disassembled as per the suggestions of several including our own Mr Onagoth. Thanks guys

not always the case....while he might have a pistol magazine here, there are even some rifle magazines which do not fall under this restriction (ie, M1 garand)

although you are correct, your example is wrong....M1 Garand uses a clip, not a mag...
