Ive seen on Youtube that there are 10 round springs for PMAGS. So down in California guys are taking apart they're 30 round Mags and putting the 10 round spring in and then putting a plastic block in the bottom to fill the gap.

I thought this would be sweet for mag changes while staying within the legal guidelines that the LAR mags give us up here.

Whats the legality of this in Canada ? I understand that we are aloud 10 rounds because the LAR's are pistol mags , Im sure its legal wording that screws us out of this but ... wonder if anyone knows the ACTUAL legal guide lines on this ?

Hahhhh!

Nope. Fraid not:

a semi-auto rifle magazine must be limited to hold no more than 5 rounds of it's designated caliber.

a pistol magazine must be limited to hold no more than 10 rounds of it's designated caliber.

That's not the exact wording of the law, but that's the clearest way to understand it. Also, this should really be in legalese eh?

You would be creating a prohibited device.

Pmags are designed for the AR centerfire rifle which can only hold 5 rounds.LAR mags are designed for a pistol (which can legally hold 10 rounds) which just happens to fit into an AR.
Below is the link to an RCMP bulletin named "Maximum Permitted Magazine Capacity".

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm

Below is the excerpt from that bulletin in regards to your question.

4. Magazines designed for one firearm but used in a different firearm

The maximum permitted capacity of a magazine is determined by the kind of firearm it is designed or manufactured for use in and not the kind of firearm it might actually be used in. As a consequence, the maximum permitted capacity remains the same regardless of which firearm it might be used in.

Example:
The Marlin model 45 (Camp Carbine) rifle chambered for 45 Auto caliber uses magazines designed and manufactured for the Colt 1911 handgun, therefore the seven round and eight round capacities are permitted. A similar example is the 10 round capacity magazine for the Rock River Arms LAR-15 pistol, regardless of the kind of firearm it is actually used in.

guess people dont pay attention when they take their PAL courses much eh?

I doubt most instructors are that well versed in this particular subject. I know most of the instructors in my area are 65+ and dont even accept this pistol/rifle mag limitation as legal. I've had arguments on their legality with this instructor in particular and he still refuses to teach his students about the the difference and how it applies.

But back on topic NO, YOU CANNOT MODIFY A RIFLE MAGAZINE TO ACCEPT MORE THAN 5 ROUNDS. Pistol magazines cannot be modified to accept more than 10. Cut and dry really, but i understand the confustion.

This wasn't a subject even remotely covered in my RPAL course, hell they didn't even really cover restricted rifles manly talked about pistols. The courses are far from unified and vary greatly. Hell the only thing I got wrong on my test was a question about hollow points being legal in Canada and the LEO that gave me the test argued that civilians couldn't buy them, it's as little as 6hrs in a room with someone that might know a bit about guns, they don't always cover everything.

even if it did ... im not 19 , I literally took the PAL the first year it was implemented. Also , before I do something that im not sure is legal I do " Due diligence " to make sure im not breaking any laws. Im new to auto loaders.

Its called being a responsible gun owner.

Looks like you managed smartass and dumbass in one sentence ...

This is such an obscure topic outside of CGN and a few other sites in Canada that most current instructors would not know of the LAR mag or even accept this as legal. Many LEO's still don't about the LAR mags and that is why I carry a print out of the RCMP bulletin and have one up on puplic display in the store to inform customers and LEO's that come in. Phil.

Thanks ! These are the posts that make CGN such a great place to come for info !

my instructor did mention the LAR mags but he would not comment about using them in rifles. He did however cover the subject of if you modify mags it makes them prohib. There was quite a lot of discussion on mags and the law in my course almost every student had questions about what they can and cannot do. Sorry I just assumed the instructors went over all the subject matter in a similar fashion. My bad

Only a true gun nutz that spends way too much of their time on sites like CGN have the faintness idea on the complexity of the gun laws.

An instructor not specializing in law would be crazy to go beyond skimming over the law for practical/cya reasons.

Actually was thinking about it now , and being that I only did a PAL we did not cover restricted arms back when I did my PAL. I just searched around and it dosnt even look like the LAR's were around when I did my FAC 15 years ago
