MOE Hand Guards on Norc M4

So I went to install my new MOE hand guards on my Norc M4 today; knowing full well that I would have to trim the front lip of the bottom hand guard (thanks for the info SM), but found that the delta ring was so tight that I couldn't even get the top hand guard on.

My question is has anyone else had to do any trimming of the rear lip of the top hand guard? Did anyone hire a guerrilla to get the delta ring back far enough to get the top hand guard to go in? Maybe I'm just used to the worn in (out) delta ring springs on the C7; but holy feck this thing is tight!

I did trim both the upper and lower to fit on mine. I also trim the Length of the lower and some on the inside where it was hitting de retaining ring.

Just a bit more sanding and you should be allright.

Also, if you are not using a handguard tool it is time you make one out of plywood.

I have to ask though; what is a "hand guard tool"?
 
It's a second pair of hands that pulls the delta ring back while you slip the handguards on/off the upper receiver.

Would you happen to have plans for this hand guard tool drawn up? I am going to start trimming my MOE hand guards, but I'd like to see plans for anything which would assist in the process....
 
Here is a video that shows you how and some pictures of mine made out of 1/2 inch plywood.

I did a 5 degree on the cut as seen on the second picture to contour the ring.

Thank you very much for the help :)

As I was messing with my hand guards 10 mins ago, trimming and test fitting, I managed to snap a piece off the front of the upper hand guard during removal - talk about anger!!! Oh well, ordering another set and not giving up! I think I'll look at trying your design ;)

On a side note, it would appear that there is certainly more trimming needed than just the front lip, lol. Good times :D
 
Well my second set of MOE hand guards is on the way; so I'll be diving back into this project again as soon as they arrive. I am going to do the search now for improvised hand guard tools, and I may build one as well, we'll see.

A fellow M4gery owner sent me some pics of the shaved down hand guard lips (thanks SM), but if any other owners have snapped pics of theirs; or of the method used to shave them, please feel free to post them or pm them to me. The more help the better on this one I think, lol.
 
Mine were a pain too, I didn't follow any advice on take some off here or there, I took it off everywhere that it didn't seem to fit. Dremel with mini sander attachment

Thanks for your post; your rifle looks great.

I have to admit, I was wondering what attachment people were using to trim their hand guards. I had started with a stone, but found that it bunged up with plastic quite quickly. I changed to a fairly coarse sanding "drum" and it seemed to go a little better.

Another issue is trying to be careful not to mark any area that is visible once the hand guards are installed; but then that might just be me and my OCD tendencies... :redface:
 
I will post pictures later, I don't have them here, but here is what is needed to do.

Trim about 1/8" on the the 2 sides of the upper front half moon to accomodate the guides (if I can call them guide.) of the foward retaining ring.

Trim the upper back half moon thickness by 1/32 to 1/16.

Trim the front and back half moon of the lower about 1/32 to 1/16, remove some length at the back.

And finally, at the last fitting you'll notice some resistance from the lower back ring, check inside the half-moon channell you'll notice some marking, trim those with a Dremel.

I'll post pictures later.
