Hi Guys,

I read up on this and it seemed like you cannot mount carbine handguards easily without a fsb, as it holds the guards in place but I found this picture of it done. Albeit, it is a proprietary system, have any of you done it? Also can you mount the Moe guards on a railed gas block? I have the hg's and I am putting together my first builds.

Thanks,

You don't need the FSB, you just need the front handguard retainer. Barrel profile must be thicker behind the gas block for the retainer to stay in place but once the handguards are mounted doesn't really matter. See no reason why your railed gas block wouldnt' work as long as it has the clearance for the retainer.

Thanks for the advice. Did you notice in the picture there looks to be some fabricated retainer there? Too much work to fit a pair of $30 hand guards unless your a machinist. I like the idea though.

The retainer is a stock piece, no machining needed. You just need some sort of a spacer to hold it there against the thicker profile behind it and the flash hider in front of it.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm having a hard time picturing it. Are you saying that the retainer is wedged against the muzzle device and the barrel in the pic?

Yes, I can't know for sure, but that seems likely, but in actual fact you would only need it to wedge against the muzzle device as the MOE handguards will wedge it from the opposite direction.

You just need some sort of a spacer taking the place of my FSB in the following picture.

My retainer is wedged between the barrel and the FSB, but you could do it between the flashhider device + spacer if needed and the MOE handguard itself, though that would require removing the muzzle device to remove the handguards.

I see what your saying. That is helpful advice. I think I will just use the moe guards for a normal carbine gas system. I will get a ff tube for the pistol length system.
