Can anyone tell me why a $169 rifle with a scope made recently which is probably a 4x at most is all the sudden worth $800? Im pretty new at this but I am baffled. Can't I but the rifle and mount a scope for less??

169 for rifle
75 for bolt mod
100 for install of scope mount
190 for scope mount
220 for scope
20 bucks to mod the stock
=
774 bucks.

Scope is a 3.2x with a wonky tube size.

If you hunt around you can find the repro sniper rifles for 599.99

Don't forget shimming the base, if necessary $50.

They do a very good job on those repros. They all seem to shoot well and are usually all matching specimens. It's easy to spot a clone as well. No numbers on the side of the barrel.

I have a couple of original Mosin snipers, one with the PE scope and one with the PU. The PE model, looks as new, the PU looks like its been there and done that. beat all to hell and 0 finish on any surface metal. The bore is excellent though and it shoots extremely well.

$750 for a repro is a good price and is almost impossible to beat.

LOL!!!
Must be talking about mine that I just listed on the EE.
For $760 it is all matching numbers & also includes shipping anywere in Canada plus no taxes (as I already paid them;)) and if it was picked up localy I was going to include a cheap, cheap deal on ammo & a free camo hunting stock. As I was going to buba it because the only time I took it out I got a nice bruse on my sholder from firing it after on 5 rounds. Damm Russian must have been tuff...
Naa, more like I am a wimp when it comes to recoil. Also since I wasn't plaining on ever shooting this rifle I figured that it deserved a better home. Now if you have a conter offer no problem just send me a PM & you will find that I am quite resonable guy to talk too.

Those Russians wore heavy winter coats.;)

I think the Repro is a good deal. It's been totally refurbed in the Ukraine or somewhere and not by an importer after from what I understand. All matching in excellent condition with a new production mount and scope.
By the time you take that $169 rifle and get a "high wall" first than add all the mods and include the smithing fees you still have an era sniper rifle clone for less than the cost of a new hunting rifle in the racks at gunstores. It's a novelty and probably fun to shoot.
Try and get an era sniper rifle or clone from any other country for that price. Not!

Satain, in my opinion, a bruise from shooting is a good mark of a hard day's shooting. I cannot count how many times I've had a nice bruise there from shooting, and now I do not even notice recoil anymore. I love the heavy cartridges in carbines!

Good luck !!!

Fact is that parts cost what they do. $169 is a decent price for a mosin, especially without tax or shipping. Add that and you're nearer $200-$230 depending on the gun. Factor in cost of scope, base and mount and shazzam, you're already at $550-$600. Add $200 for gun work and you're at $750-$800.

I for one am impressed by mosins. No headspace problems, often quite accurate, easy to assemble and disassemble, built like tanks. The scopes themselves can be taken apart and reassembled at home (try that with any other scope) and are solidly built. Everything is very intuitive and sturdy on a mosin.
