Thinking of getting a Moison sniper. What do I need to know. Looking for shooter/investment. What is this about import markings?

The recent batch are genuines sniper refurbished. Somes have PU scope others have SVT scope. The SVT scope can be marked "CB" on the elevation turret, meaning that the scope was calibrated for the longer barrel of the mosin sniper. Import marking are laser etched, hiden under the handguard. Tula sniper are marked CH on barrel, mean that they were originaly issued as sniper and they sell for a bit more because they are less common than the Izhevsk. Izhevsk have the scope number stamped on the left side of the barrel, on the chamber. If you look carefully on a Izhevsk were the scope number is, you will notice that the previous scope number was ground off and the new scope number was restamped. I got a Izhevsk with a SVT scope, didn't have time to shoot it yet but the rifle is in excellent condition, bore look like new.

I wouldn't wait too long. They're only so many, then gone. They are the real thing refurbed sometime in the 50's. Import marks are just laser etched and hardly noticeable under the handguard. I own a Izhevsk with a PU scope that I bought from TradeEx. Bores are VG+ and shoots accurate.

Are they in good shape?

The 2 original 1943 TULA PU's I bought are in new condition. Absolutely mint except for a few scuffs in the shellac stock finish. One PU still has the original dated 1943 scope and stamped mount. The other is electropencilled on the mount indicating a replacement mount and the scope is non-dated.

Get one as soon as you can or they will be gone. I believe Weimajack still has one left and it will be hand picked so you know it'll be a nice one. Not sure about the other vendors. Ellwood Epps had a few but they may be all gone now.

So they are all arsenal refinished?

Yes, these rifles are refurb'd but all components and the rifles themselves are original sniper components built in WWII. Some have post war stocks.

The $650 price point is excellent, seeing that 91/30 sniper clones used to sell for $500-900 in recent years and the scopes and mounts were often repro's.

These rifles will appreciate in value (I bought three - one scope needed internal adjustments and the shelac was slightly dinged/chipped on all three rifles). An all original 91/30 without any refurb would probably run you closer to $2000, and then you might as well wait out on a deal on an Enfield sniper which can sometimes be found for $4000 (Usually $6000+).

All snipers are pricey, desirability goes as follows (least to best):
Clones
Clone built with original parts
Refurb/Restored Sniper (using original parts)
All original Sniper
Untouched Sniper

All will only increase in value, but the price point jumps quite a bit between the rifles listed above.

So these such as from Tradex are Refurb with original parts.
Yes, original sniper rifles that have had parts refurbed. Mine has the original barrel, war stock, bolt. Scope was refurbed, but still a WWII scope and matched to the barrel, new lacquer and rebluing. Interesting to see how the stock was setup in those times with shims in the right places made from ammo can sheet metal. They really did tinker with them back then. Compared to other 91/30's I own I've noticed that the butt is more rounded at the top, almost like they gave a little more cheek rise to it. The handguard and forward stock area is darker shellacked for some reason. Others I've seen look the same.
These are not clones nor untouched originals.

been phoning around and I`m being told they by different people that what they have or had are basically reproductions, is there two different groups or lots of these things imported? I getting hesitant.

I believe westrifle made most of the repros if not all. Tradex and psmilitaria have refurbished sniper psmilitaria also has repros but for some weird reason they cost more the the refurbished ones.

Tradeex is awesome to deal with I'm sure they would be more then happy to answer all your questions about their snipers . Their site says they have no import marks and the guns I got from them had very little cosmoline on and in them and I herd from other that they had very little cosmoline on theirs to.

I've never dealt with ps before so I can't vouch for them

And if you want a investment then if you can get a Tula they tend to go for more and the rumor is they made better mosins in general then izhevsk

I bought one, and it shoots amazing.
I was disappointed by the lack of explanation by all dealers when they became available. I still bought one, and would like to buy a 2nd. At the same time - I'd like a clear, precise explanation of what exactly I'm buying.

I say buy one.

I have a repro, which is a great shooter, and the refurb sniper, which is also a great sniper. Quickly became my favourite gun at the range.

The reason why Tula sell for a bit more than Izhevsk is because they are less common but there,s no proof that they make better sniper rifle.

Tula's sell for more because they kept their fit and finish to pre war standards all throughtout the war (important to some people). Whereas Izhevsk quickly dropped their prewar fit and finish to save time in the production process. Hence why some of them look like they where machined with a hatchet. They both still operate the same. If you are really interested go to http://7.62x54r.net/ and do some reading.

The only problem with the refurbed Tula Snipers is now they have serial numbers on the barrel sides, whereas only Izhevsk did that to the originals.
So to me the Izhevsk refurbed snipers still look more original. A minor point because neither is totally original anymore.

I recommend purchasing from Weimar, PSmilitaria or TradeEx. As mentioned by other members, PSmilitaria and TradeEx sold clones and refub'd snipers and advertise them as such. Some retailers are not quite as honest about the origin of their snipers.

Tula is also more desirable because 1943-Post, Tula only made snipers, where Izhesvk made standard rifles and snipers, so there is the chance that a standard rifle could be modified and sold as a rifle.
