Range day yesterday, still pretty cold! Just me and a couple of old bench rest shooters getting their gopher rigs dialed in. All of us are on the shady side of 60 , oldest guy is 74. Anyhoot testing some loads. My Poly 14 with USGI everything but receiver, NF 10x scope got nice 1.25" 5 shot groups at 100m with 168grSMK over H4895 41gr range of powder. My Finnwolf put some 150gr loads into 3 shot 1" group, never seems to make much difference what load I use,SAKO's tend to be boring this way. Still can't get my Win 64 in 30-30 to shoot a reload as well as store bought Win ammo :(. My Garand M1D shoots it's usual 3" groups no matter what I feed it:rolleyes: Finally, end of day got out my Molot shooter ( I bought a couple of these from Weimajack) and shot it abit. It was the ugliest one of the ones I got from him. A bit of the sticky bolt, some chips in the finish, etc. Bore is pristine, TULA 1943. They others were too pretty to shoot, this one's sorta homely ,so I decided to shoot it, alot. It put 4 shots into a ragged hole with one "flier" 1/2" away from hole, again at 100m. Ammo : Chinese surplus. It does this regularly.Seems to really love the Chinese stuff, Bulgarian surplus not quite as good, and hates the Czech stuff. No real incentive to reload for it unless I want to stretch it beyond 300meters. The bench rest guys said bring it to their weekly match for fun. If the Molots are not "real" PU's , they sure are great shooters. Makes me scratch my hairless head when I compare the targets ( +++$ Poly build/fancy scope) vs. $700 pu and old surplus ammo, 3x scope)......

I'll try to add pics after breakfast if I can figure out how to do it.

Hmmm..honestly I would not rely on surplus ammo, Chinese in particular. ..try and source PPU or other commercial ammo..and reloading is likely your best bet...though single fliers usually are a result of the shooter...

SA85M1 - read hist post again. He's not complaining. 4 shots in a ragged hole, and a "flyer" only 1/2" away, is a damn good group for any rifle.

For a 70 year old surplus rifle, firing cheap surplus ammo, it's quite amazing actually.

PU frustration is the accuracy, not the flier

Clarification.. I love my PU and how it shoots surplus ammo

I have shot PPU in this rifle, it's even better, but alot more expensive. For my purposes the surplus shoots just great. My frustration is that I can't get my expensive rifles to shoot as well as my beat up PU;)

I guess you need to make an effort to shoot more of that Czech ball if you are unhappy with your tight groups.
It can really vary between rifles and ammo lots.
Mine shoots well with "aqua blue box" Czech silvertip, but the "aqua green boxes" made a couple years later produces 4" groups from the same rifle. Unfortunately I have a whole crate of the green.

My buddies PU M?N sniper does the same thing on round #4, it will throw a flier 1/2" to the right.I suspect the barrel is heating up causing it to walk. The first three guys would have had the buttons shot off their shirts so who cares.Harold........PS the Chinese "NC" machinegun ball will cut .75 in several of my hexes so it likely ain't the ammo.

That solves a mystery for me. The Czech ammo is widely praised, I have the aqua green stuff and it has never grouped well in any rifle I've tried it with. Aha!
