So I was at the gun store the other day, and ended up coming home with some Hornady 40gr Moly coated bullets.

After researching them they seem to have their pros and cons. Anybody use them? Thoughts?

Thanks everyone, much appreciated

Make sure you want moly in your barrel before you use them. Do some reading before you use them. You can tumble the bullets and get the moly off and then use them like normal bullets if you decide not to put moly in your barrel.

Is it hard to get the Moly out when done? I read that acetone will take it off, not sure if theres any truth to that. I would want to try it on some of the bullets first.

Do you find it affects the accuracy of subsequent non-moly coated bullets?

I have used moly coated bullets for years with a problem. You can clean moly out of a barrel without a problem. I use a foaming bore cleaner if I want to go down the a bare barrel again.

There isn't any difference in accuracy between coated and uncoated bullets. The only difference I have found is that you don't have to clean as much when using moly.

I use moly bullets in my .243 which tends to be a bit of a fouler. To get the full benefit of the product, the bore should be treated with moly prior to using, other wise the bare barrel simply strips the moly off the bullet and fouls as before. If you shoot naked bullets in a moly'ed bore, the reverse happens, the bullet strips the molly off the barrel, and fouling reoccurs. Moly bonds to steel very readily, and I've treated barrels successfully with both moly powder and with moly past. Likewise, treating bullets is quite simple. Get an empty pill or vitamin bottle and pour a box of bullets into it (avoid touching the bullets with bare hands prior to coating) then add about a quarter of a tea spoon full of moly powder, fasten the lid snugly, then place it in a vibratory tumbler (lid to the left so it doesn't unscrew). Allow it to run for an hour or so; no lid is necessary on the tumbler, but it will be noisy. Lay down some news paper with paper towel over top, then dump the bottle onto the paper towel, give the bullets a rub, then move them onto a sheet of clean paper towel, and repeat, at which point they will have a shiny, smooth black finish. Return them to the box until you're ready to load them.
