Howdy - bare with me as I give a bit of background to my question.

I've been shooting moly coated 168's in my m1a supermatch for quite some time. The gun gets a good cleaning (barrel foam/patches) every 100 rounds or so and I've not had any degredation in accuracy. (sub 1/2" - 1" moa .... usually)

I recently aquired a XCR and I've been shooting 55's HPBT Moly's through it and I was thinking about trying some hornady 69's HPBT through it to take advantage of the 1/9" but they are not moly coated.

I ran into a guy today that just about squeezed a brick out when I mentioned that I was thinking about running non-moly bullets through a barrel that has seen moly. He told me that I might as well throw out the barrel as the copper will only build up ontop of the moly coating already in the barrel. this doesn't make any sense to me, especially when my patches are coming out clean.

Is the truth somewhere out there or is this guy just too much of an "expert" for me? Course he also said he could group 2" at 500m standing with iron sights....... :) that part I believe but the question part I'm not so sure of :)

cheers,

he's 'full-o-####' as we like to say. It's not a good idea to alternate between moly and naked bullets, although if you intend to switch it is possible to get the moly residue out of your bore with a good cleaning. JB works exceptionally well for this task

You shoot moly bullets and clean? I have put over 800 round of moly down my barrel without so much as a patch. After scubbing it out it took about 200 more to get it back to where it was. How was it shooting before I cleaned it? Well I dropped 3 points over a 7 range Agg and won the match by V's.
I have been shooting moly bullets for about 12 years. The only naked bullets my rifle has every seen was in Bisley this year.
If you shoot moly, keep shooting it until the groups open up. If you switch between Moly and naked bullets clean before switching.
