Moment of Truth.. .308/303 british test

I'd like to see the same test with a scope and sand bags on a bench.

That's how I tested my .308 Power Point's vs. .311 Pro Hunters.

Sandbagged off the bench at a proper range, at a lasered 100 yards.

A No4 Mk1*, full wood, with a barrel that would pass for new and open sights; and a No4 Mk1 sporter with synthetic stocks and a Bushnell 4X scope, and a typical sporter barrel.

I don't stress about shortages of .311 or .312 bullets any more...

So do you use a .308" sizer stem in you dies for that?

There will be another Test, nxt week, on my home range with a solid rest bagged, Without a scope though..

hahha That's a gooden!! I didn't think of that!
What's going on with Woodleigh, are they exporting so many bullets that there's none left for the locals? Their website lists 130 gr, 174 gr, and 215 gr in .312" diameter.

While Woodleigh proberly have em in stock, im not sure? but I don't pay for Premium projies to wack into piles of dirt, however if I were to be hunting Buffalo with the cartridge I would use them.. You would be looking at around $70 for 50.
I could get hornadys from QLD (north) to the South for $75 per 100 incl freight but only 5 boxes left in that store.

But hey... I can buy 30-30 projies an use with confidence :D

Guna have a few shots this evening at 100m range with rifle rested nicely.

good thread guys thanks for the discussion

from my side of things I have no problem using the 308win FLS die but with unprimed cases, I do it before seating primer otherwise it can slightly push the primer out an need to be re pressed.

but im de priming with 270win dies
:)

Yeah look with the Testing at 100m, the front site is taking up the X which is most of an A4 sheet, so its pretty difficult to get a definite POI . So I wont make too much comment on the 308 dia accuracy without Scoping it and givin it a go at least..

all shots were on A4 but rather spread out with 3 grouping reasonable but it took me some shots to get a feel for where to put the Bead in the sight picture an once I had that ok I know I stuffed up elevation on a shot which obviously spreads the 'group'..

Still confident for Stalking / sit an wait hunting on Deer the size of Whitetail does , down here that would be a Fallow doe critter.

Im going to tote the Ruger around for a few hunts this next week when some rain hits and see if I can put a hole in one.

Cheers

That's a neat Green sound suppressor your young laddie installed on the butt of his gun (over the muzzle speaker) Great times. He'll grow up thinking of you like he should.................as a great dad.

Yes.

Actually my Lee 7.62 x 54R dies came with .308 and .311 (I think) sizers, with the .308 pre-installed. I use the Lee 7.62 x 54R dies to neck size 303 British (either for .308 or .311 bullets, depending on stem size I use), as the 7.62 x 54R dies have a fatter body and can fully neck size 303 brass without touching the shoulder or body at all. If I use my actual 303 Brit dies to neck size for 303 Brit, I can only go just over half way down before I start resizing the neck or body of the brass, which i don't want.

Just a handy thing I figured out while reloading for way too many cartridges...

If you're that short you should cast a bunch. Out to 100 yards the 303 will be effective on deer sized critters and accuracy is quite good as well. Best of luck.

How come I can buy Woodleigh bullets for 40 bucks or less per 50, in Australia and you can't?

sorry I was going off the .358 woodleighs, they are $70 per 50, I just see Woodleigh 215s are $40-55 per 50. in some of the bigger stores closer to the city.

Hey time for a THREAD HIGHJACK....

For your inside perspective, what's the deal with Austrialian gun laws right now? I was under the impression anything more than a single shot .22 was out...
Please illuminate for the benefit of all. Nice looking gun!

1 - i like the hut!
2 - seeing you resting on the pickup bed reminds me of a story: 1975 was out with a veterinarian on his rounds ...carried a 22-250 for vermin with a BIG scope and was very accurate with it ...300 yards out we sighted a coyote ...on go the breaks and out comes the rifle ...rested it on the truck bed ...touched off the shot and BOOM! he shot a hole in the opposite side truck panel! ...he had a big quid in his mouth, he just looked, spit, put the rifle away, and we never spoke of that again

Laugh2

...nice rifle ya got there

hahahhahaah nw! unfortunately I know where he is coming from! I've done it before!! ohh my.

Mate regarding the gun laws, its not too bad... east State is a bit different but in general aslong as it falls under a Catorgory A or B firearm, its pretty right to own, We all have Gun license and from there send Permit to acquire to firearms registry and mention what it is an what it is for, all goes ahead an can buy a firearm the week later.

say you had 4 .308s they may question why you need so many .308s but its a rare thing to happen.. don't know anyone knocked back.. there may be a limit on how many we can own but im not sure of the figure.

No semi autos..... unless you get a Cat C/D license.. primary producer etc an need a semi for pest control purpose.
No AR type rifles unless with C/D license.

Cat A/B is your Rimfires and Centrefires Bolt, lever & pump...

No calibre restrictions but a Genuine reason to acquire is needed..

Handguns are allowed but on a Cat H license.. an you must shoot at a range/gunclub X amount of times per month to hold valid reason.

That's about all I can rattle off top of my head, any more specific Qs . happy to answer.
