In the Snopes version there are a couple of things that for me at least do not add up.

Firstly is the bear's size and weight. There are a lot of folks out there who are very good at estimating a bear's weight, but in the coarse of a year it is normal the a bear's weight to fluctuate greatly, and had this bear been killed in the spring it could of easily weighed 30% less. For this reason it is very important that the skull measurement is taken, yet this measurement has not been published. It is unclear if the published measurement is a measurement of the skin only, or the carcass.
