After 6 mornings of not seeing a bull we got lucky on the seventh day. We could not get closer than 328 yards. (Leica Range Finder).

Using a 7mm - 08 that was sighted for 300 yards with 154 grain Hornady bullets my first shot was through the lungs and he didn't take a step... just stood there planting his feet farther apart trying to stay up. My second shot was just behind his head and dropped him cold.

Then using the truck and a snatch block on a stump and 1000 feet of rope we pulled him uphill across stumps and logs. It was kind of funny as some hunters from the US showed up with a guide and they couldn't believe we had enough rope to do that. (We can reach out to about 500 yards and I wouldn't take a shot that far anyway).

He appears to be about a 3 or 4 year old bull in prime condition... Very little meat lost and 3 happy hunters are home with the meat hanging in the locker ... :D

7mm08 Moose Killer

Thats good shooten.
I have a 7mm08 and I was wondering if I should go with the 140 gr or 120 gr for deer?
The 158 gr load sounds great for moose, what kind of gun did you use?

Did the US moose hunters use land cannons, like 300 Win Mag and 375 H&H's.

I didn't see or ask what the guided hunters were using...

I built my rifle using a long action 700 and a Gaillard barrel and a Kwik-Klip conversion in a factory gray laminated stock with a 3.5 x 10 Leupold Boone & Crockett scope in dual dovetail mounts. 139 grain Hornady bullets work very well too.

328 yards to my truck in the center top of the picture... just a dot...

I figure someone will say something about "road hunting" but WOW. Way to go, seems like you found the ideal moose gun.

YES ILL say somthing about road hunting ....IT WORX congrats on the bull, its been a tuff year for alot of folks to get one and many have gone home empty handed, and thanks for finalising my desition on the wifes new rifle, we were leaning between 7mm-08 and 6.5x55 in a tikka t3 but I realy needed a good excuse for the 7mm-08 and now you gave me one :)

people can sit on this board and yap off into the mooses weener about road hunting, but at the same time there the guys you see at overwitea buying beef all winter ;)

alot of areas especialy in the bug kill zone of BC now there are logging blocks which span 2-3 miles long and 1-2 miles deep , you could sit there and HOPE a moose walked out or you could drive these massive blocks and cover mass area, nothing wrong with setting up over a medow or mash for the rutt either but its only about 10% as productive in the end and years like this one were moose are hard to find you either better be a apex predator OR have ####house luck and a horseshoe up yer behind

congrats again on the bull :D
