Moose caliber help

While I haven't done any test to confirm for myself I remember reading recently from John Barness that Hornady has recently beefed up the jacket and they behave like an interlock.
Premium bullets are cheap insurance and I prefer to use them if my rifle shoots them well, but I'd feel well armed with any of those 3 and heavy Corelockt, Power point, Interlock or similar.

I ordered some Hornady bullets to use in the 30-06, both 220 gr round nose, and these interlock SST 180 gr., to try working up a load for moose this month. I was thinking the 180 gr might be better than the Hornady 165 gr interlock SP I already have, but now am wondering if maybe I should just stick with them, or use the 220 gr., if I can get them to shoot.

Better get going on the 2018 moose load. Moose season is coming up fast. I'd start with the 220s.

I have some of those 180gr SSTs here as well. Was going to see how they worked in a 308 at slower velocities. Might be a good load for deer hunting.

I was at the range today, working with the 45-70. I didn't think I was going to get it working to satisfy me, but after putting a new leupold on it, I got it grouping pretty good at consistently about 2 inches at 100 yds. That is 500 gr. cast lead at a bit over 1400 fps. Now if I can just convince myself to accept the limits of shorter range and single shot. I don't think penetration should be a problem, and expansion probably not needed.

Both sons kind of fell in love with my 30-06, so it looks like I lost it :). One of them will be carrying it, and the other one probably the 270.

One vote for 7Rem Mag. Only because it worked for me last year. 150gr Nosler Partition at 275 yards placed behind the foreleg and lodged in shoulder on other side. He lay right back down in his bed.

All 3 will work just fine...I've also used a 7-08 and yes 139 SST'S ...shot placement is the key.
If you don't have the patience and confidence to wait for a good shot then move up to a bigger magnum so you can drill 'em stem to stern. ☺

I would rather run the 220 round or nose or 165 interlock, at least until I could confirm the toughness of the new SST's for myself. The time crunch is on for our moose hunt this year, sounds like your .45-70 is ready though and I am sure your sons will let you use one of your flatter shooting rifles if need be.

Hit the moose in the vitals with a bullet. As is already said here they die easy and are not dragons. Look up gopro moose on you tube a guy in NFL pops moose with his No III, they are not mythical beasts just big. I load my 14 with 180g SSTs for moose and 150g SSTs for deer and Elk. Having said that, I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot a moose with the 150’s If thats what’s in my rifle at the time. Cause I’m going to shoot it with a bullet, in a vital location, which wins every time.

They got the order mixed up and ordered both the 180 SST and 180 Hornady interlock SP flat base. So they gave me a choice and I took the standard 180 gr SP, along with the Hornady 220 gr RN interlock. CGN can be really helpful sometimes :)
So I did some reloading and did the test shooting yesterday, the 220 gr are running a bit over 2500 fps (my chronograph) and hitting in a bit under 1-inch group, at the same point of impact as the 165 gr ones. The 180 gr are running a bit over 2850 fps, with about a 2-inch group, but about 2 1/2 inches higher point of impact. I think it is time to go hunting. Quite happy with these loads.

First 2 moose with Win 94 30-30 pre-64.
The old standard 170 grain green box (Rem-Peters) core-lokt factory ammo.
Factory iron sights.
Perfectly adequate.
They aren’t that hard to kill.
Light carbine suits my smaller stature.
Back then (early 70s in Ontario) a moose license was good for any moose and/or a black bear.

Moose die easy. The largest in the world are here and in Alaska.

Many are still taken each year using factory ammo in 30-30s and 303 Br. The new world record was shot a few years ago by Heinz Naef from Dawson City using his iron sighted Lee Enfield.

Yes, any medium game caliber will do just fine.

There seemed to be very little difference between hitting one with a 300 WM (only one though) and hitting them with a 30-06 (3).

The bigger magnums seem to put them down a bit quicker but its not like they weren't dying fast either. Same with a 9.3 Mauser. Did the job nice but was it needed?

All things considered, 30-06 is the one for me.

A few years back I had made two sets of 30-06 reloads. Some maxed out, premium bullet H4350 loads for moose in sparkly snazzy nickel plated cases, and some mild 165gr SST loads for my M1 Garand to take it easy on the old gal.

Hunting time came around and guess what? Can't remember where the heck I put the hunting loads! Looked dubiously towards the Garand loads....well, its what we got.

My best friend and I both shot, both killed. His shot was a bit far back towards the rear ribs, younger bull but big enough. It didn't go far at all before plunking down and becoming too sick to move.
