Moose caliber help

Ive killed 2 moose with a 45 cal muzzleloader, 5 or 6 with a 30-30, 25 or 26 with a 30-06, & 4 with a 300 wm. If it goes bang hard enough to feel it on your shoulder & you can shoot it will work fine. Moose are not dragons.

Do you have one already sighted in with a Partition, Accubond or TSX/TTSX? All three cartridges are up to the task if you do your part of selecting an appropriate bullet and placing it well.
What rifle do you have the most comfort with and does it wear the best scope for the conditions you are likely to encounter?

Type of bullet and grain of course is important, but knowing the shot placement is so vital. Good luck filling your tag. Shoot straight and stay safe

Moose die easy. The largest in the world are here and in Alaska.

Many are still taken each year using factory ammo in 30-30s and 303 Br. The new world record was shot a few years ago by Heinz Naef from Dawson City using his iron sighted Lee Enfield.

Out of them is go with the 30-06 with a 180 grain, I took my moose last December with my 308, 2 shots, double lung and a liver, dropped fast from 100 yards

I have seen a bull go down quickly to a 100gr .243 win , so really, anything 24-25 cal or bigger is enough. WHERE you shoot them is a lot more important that WHAT YOU SHOOT THEM WITH. Moose are not tough to kill.

In my Moose & Deer Hunting group we have: Two .338's, Two 7mm Mags, Two 30.06s, Two .270s., One 6.5X55 SE
All of us have 12 gauge Pump Shotguns also for rabbits and Waterfowl, most of us have .22s for Grouse/Squirrel/Groundhog hunting too.
Not arguing...Most Deer & Moose shots are 1 shot kills ( 100m or less usually).
Great advice on this site. In a couple of weeks I am taking my 30.06 into Norther Ontario Moose Hunting and I will be shooting 180's from the Store shelf because I don't reload.
Accuracy is always on my mind, not the power level.
Have fun shooting!

Just wondering why, as I suspect you have a valid reason, if you care to elaborate.
Thanks.

Hornady describes these bullets as "The Hornady® SST® (Super Shock Tip) is designed to deliver tremendous shock on impact while expanding quickly and reliably, particularly at higher velocities."

I'm not sure I would want a fast expanding bullet for moose even though they do list it for larger game such as moose.

SST's is a sure way to lose meat, they grenade and turn offside meat into jelly infused shrapnel....the best shot placement can't control deflections, I've gave up too much meat using them

I prefer the 7mm Rem Mag.

160gr Accubond with full charge of H1000 or Retumbo.

Sight in for 4" high at 100 yards and you have Moose killer from 0-400 yards....just aim for the vitals and shoot....no drop compensation necessary.

Close range just aim for the heart.

That is certainly the truth!

As I posted in another CGN thread, other than its accuracy, which is fine, the SST is about the most unpredictable bullet made. One time it holds together and penetrates well, another it becomes a grenade. This with perfectly placed shots into the heart lung area. Seen it enough times on moose a big mountain caribou bulls that I decided to not use them about 15 years ago.

One thing you can be sure of, it is not going to hold together well on bone. Even hits on ribs cause blowups.

Cup and core bullets at high velocities are not a good combo for large animals such as moose.

True, but they still work well in lower velocity cartridges like 6.5X55, 7X57, 30-30, 308, 30-06, 8X57, 35 Rem and 358 Win.

There is something about a bullet loafing along at 2200- 2700 fps that just plain works!

For factory ammo, Federal's Trophy Bonded Tip ammo is among the best both accuracy and performance wise.
I would simply select the best shooting rifle using 270 Win 140gr, 30-06 180gr and 7 Rem Mag 160gr.
I know of 2 friends who swear by 160gr Trophy Bonded Tip in 7 Rem Mag Tikka T3 rifles.
