Moose Calling

Google is your friend. I never use a call, just cup your hands around your mouth and let out your longest, nasielist (if that’s a word) whaaaaaaugh you can

Calling moose is easy, do a google search and it will show you everything you need to know. I use my hands most times, and sometimes a horn to get the extra distance.

My grandfather used to make birch bark calls when I was a kid. Great memories of being up at the camp with him watching him make them. He’d step out on the porch late at night and call and I’d get such a thrill hearing one answer atop the hill on the other side of the lake. He had pretty much quit moose hunting by then but he sure enjoyed calling them and making calls. Whoever bought the camp from him must have gotten a pile of calls in the deal because he never kept one after selling the camp and moving to Vancouver Island when he retired.
I don’t know where the one he made me ever got to? I can only guess it got thrown out by mom when I left home? I’d have to make one if I were to moose hunt, it’s just tradition, lol.

I started taking more moose when I learned to call..... or more importantly , use the call properly.
there was some good videos from ontario out of doors I found really helpful and that all about moose site is good too. I'll see if I can find the site or links to some of the vids.
I usually start with broadcast calls when i first enter into an area. The long nasally call starting high, and ending with a fade as the lungs empty. I'll make the first one long , 8 to 10 seconds and then wait a good 20 minutes before deciding if I wanna represent a bull or a cow..... or maybe even a calf depending on what's going on. If I make noise accidentally I usually follow it with a calf squeal or with an annoyed cow call. If I want to represent a bull I'll also have to decide how mature I want that bull sound to be depending on the maturity of the animal I'm pulling in.
anyhow, I could go on for hours on this topic , though I'm no professional caller LOL
I learned alot from that ontario out of doors moose calling series... and I've had some exciting results using my adaptations of those calls. There is also a big french guy that does calls and his broadcast calls are fantastic and very worth learning to mimick. He's got some good antler scrape tricks too

By all means do not be afraid to try. My very first attempt at a moose grunt brought out a bull at very close range. Very first call! I had no tag, and he came within 30 yards. Then I stepped out where he could see me, and he walked a cross the swamp. I stopped him twice more with grunt calls using only my hands, even though he had seen me.
Bark calls do project your voice further, and there are several good commercial calls as well.

Whatever you do.....do not buy a Fox-Pro(if legal in your province?)....and play at MAX volume all Morning long.

Ran into this situation last year when a hunter was playing a Cow in Heat so loud I could hear it 5 kms away....lol!

Moose have excellent eyesight for detecting movement and their hearing and sense of smell is unrivaled.

Your best bet for calling is scout areas and look for fresh Bull sign. Bulls have rounder tracks and big bulls will have more pronounced dew claws behind track. Cows are usually in groups "pointier" tracks usually accompanied by calf or yearling track.

Cold calling an area can work but it's best to cut a fresh track or have had a visual or audible indication of a Bull in area.

If you have a Bull in area come Sept 15 he will start coming to a Call.

Any number of noises can attract a Bull.

Cow calling.
Bull glucking/grunting.
Raking trees.
Urinating in water/footsteps in water and splashing.

If a Bull is allready tending a cow it's unlikely you will be able to pull him away from her....no matter how good you sound.

It's best to learn to call by mouth because Moose are not really fussy.

I find calm, foggy crisp frosty mornings are best. Never had much luck calling Moose on windy mornings....or windy evenings. I will usually spend those days scouting or "road hunting"(,even though I Despise road hunting)

Cow moan can be accomplished by plugging your nostrils, rolling your tongue back into the roof of your mouth to restrict air, try sourcing the call from deep in your gut/diaphragm. And make a eee-rrrr-nnn-aaa the "rrrrr" sound is most important. Try and make the call "waiver" or whine/wail.

Bulls make an "oooo" ungh or "oooo" aaah sound.

If Moose are close by calling too loud will usually spook them.

So start softly and subtle and as morning or evening progresses increase volume and amount of calling.

Stay patient and stay in 1 area. Sometime Moose will come in in 15 minutes other times 2 hours and sometimes more than one Bull will respond.

If a Bull does announce himself Glucking continually just let him come and Cow call softly with short calls.

If he stops and smashes trees mimic him because he is trying to see IF another Bull will respond.

Mature Bulls will often hang up because MANY times a Cow is calling because she is either being harassed by a younger bull or doesn't want the Bull she is with.....so an approaching Bull will often hang up if he doesn't hear another Bull. Most mature Bulls have encountered humans in a calling situation so they become educated somewhat.

Good luck!

Cows will come to both Cow & Bull cows.

2 years ago I had a Cow come in and she had a paddle horn Bull right behind her.

I was doing both Cow calls and Bull calls.....Moose are Social animals and also curious so quite common for Cows to check out what is going on.

I Second the moose madness DVDs they are awesome it’s like a college course in moose calling, best I’ve seen. some awesome footage also.
