Moose Calling

My eldest son is a real good caller. On a clear cold windless morning he likes to start off by breaking a thick dry stick , one that will make a really loud echoing CRACK (this seems to really attract their attention) .After awhile he will start his long moaning (pleading!) cow calls which last for about 6 to 10 seconds followed by a few minutes of silence as we listen for a response .
I've watched a cow do the so called "urinating " thing in a beaver pond . She wasn't pissing in the water , she was feeding on some aquatic roots . She would stick her head completely under the belly deep water , grab a mouthful of food, lift her head up with a loud torrent of water cascading off her head and mane .She would wait , listening intently until the water sounds diminished to a few "plink plinks" then repeat every thing .I never heard a bull call but one big fellow came smashing and crashing out of the surrounding tag alders with so much noise he scared the cow and calf out of the beaver pond . If they had stayed in the pond (20 yds away from me ) I would have gotten a good shot at him with my compound bow .Sadly he was just out of reach at 50 yds. hot on trail of the cow and calf.

One great way is to put your hands up to your mouth and shout out in a low voice, " Here Moosie , Here Moosie"
And if you are in Ontario make sure its english cause they wont understand any foreign language!
Happy hunting and calling!

Intresting thread. I leave on Wednesday so reading all with interest. Last time I went in 2016 a young bull nearly ran us over when we raked a busted up alder with a plywood antler. So yeah, that worked!
Later that trip, after we had filled our tag we had a bit of a party and I had a wee bit too much to drink. I stumbled out of the cabin into the frosty night air and projectile vomited several litres of beer off the porch. I’m a very vocal puker - kinda roaring as it rattles past my vocal chords. I got a long lonely cow call off the mountainside in response to my puke! LOL But I don’t recommend it as a tactic during hunting!
