moose calls

I've made calls out of rolled-up birch bark and tar paper. I've called in bulls(and cows) with bottom-removed one gallon Javex jugs . I've used the coffee can hockey skate lace combo . All successfully .But the most I've used is the cupped hands(they are always with you).
I'm gonna make one from a magic carpet (Thanks ROA).
I've used a shoulder blade for years.
Also a trick we have used is to bust a big dry stick by bending it with your hands and knee until it breaks . It makes a tremendously loud crack that echoes through the slash /bush especially in early morning with no wind .

Although most guys wait until the rut then cow call, a bull moose can be called in quite easily prior to the rut. It's simple when you understand how a moose responds to various stimuli in his world. A mature bull will not tolerate another bull close by as the rut approaches so take advantage of this little gem to bring him into your lap. First locate a bull's rub line. They are very similar to deer rubs only a lot bigger. Take your handy-dandy dry scapula (butchers are a great source) and literally beat the ever lovin' tar out of Mr. Bullwinkle's rub for a minute, then stop abruptly. Be ready and listen carefully for 5 to 10 minutes all the while searching and listening for any sight or sound of the bull. If no response, sneak carefully along to the next rub and repeat. Keep this up and if the creator of the rubs is within earshot, he'll soon show up to investigate who's infringing on his territory.

Scrapers work well. In a pinch you can use a 1lt oil jug with the bottom cut off on a stick. I mostly use our coleman lantern case top, works well against the brush.

Go to a butcher shop and ask for a shoulder blade, We have enough moose, cattle blades in our camp that the bears keep checking in.

I've always used thoes birch bark cone types you see at Can Tire and Wal mart and a moose shoulder blade; as well your hands work when he's in close but the sound doesn't carry nearly as far. The cone type call will pull in a moose for several kilometres in the right terrain, it's amazing how far they carry and how far the bulls can hear from. They can also cover three or four kilometres in a couple of hours to come over...

When I was in the Yukon, I saw a white fiberglass cone call. It worked like any other cone, but also could be raked in the alders and would sound like horns in the brush. Also, the fact that it was white, it could be waved in the air to give the approaching bull the illusion of another bull's horns in the distance. If I recall it was made in Alaska. WhyNot? would know more about them as he seemed familiar with the call.

Haven't tried moose calling always been self conscience that my calling isn't that good...but have carried a birch bark call around for years... :D

keepa.......
how do you use this method?ive heard of it before.
but ive neaver seen how it is done
Sorry that I didn't get back sooner...been camping...but it is just like Bone-collector sez .
A seasoned shoulder blade has a nice hollow ring/amplified sound to it ....and a lot lighter to carry than even a small antler .

My calling doesn't sound too good (to me) either...at least compared to my kid....but I have called in a lot of bulls...and a few cows ...so give 'er a try .
I like to call using different methods/calling techniques so that a wary bull doesn't get used to one type/method of call .
One year, for bowhunting, I even made up a full sized decoy out of Styrofoam sheets...

Number one advice when calling, especially in your case, since you admit to being uncertain about your call. PATIENCE. A helluva pile of people will lack the experience or confidence to stick it out, if they do not get an answer right away, they will leave. Meanwhile the bull moose is steadily approaching and arrives to your calling site long after you have left.

There's a ton of excellent DVD's around that you can watch to learn how to call, but there is no better teacher then experience. Best thing is to just give it a try, you never know how good you might be.

These pics are all bulls that we called in last October.

demonicle has some great advice... too many guys call and sit at a spot for 30 mins and then pack up and leave.. well if you have a bull that hears your calls from say 2 kms away, its gonna take him a good while to arrive.. stay put!!!!!!!!!!! never run and gun moose NEVER!!!
