What would your prefered bullet choice be for moose in a 7mm Rem mag, with 9.5 twist?
Choices are
165 Sierra Gameking BTSP
or
160 Nosler Partition

I have purchased both and plan on taking them to the range to see if my new X-bolt prefers one or the other, but I'm looking for personel preferences, hopefully with an explantion. I know the typical answer will be put it in the boiler house and either way it's meat in the freezer but is their any reliability issues any bad experiences, etc?
Range if everything goes according to plan would be around 100- 200 yards.

I really like the Nosler PT for moose. Have used it in the 25-06 for a few moose with very good results. No bullets recovered!
 
Personnaly I would use both.

If I could develop loads that worked with both bullets I would practice alot with the cheaper gamekings and then use noslers for the hunt. The gamekings would also get the job done just fine.
 
7 mag on moose

Either will work on moose. The Sierra may prove to be a bit moore accurate at the range. I have found the nosler partition to be best on moose in that a broad side shot the bullet can be found up against the far side hide, meaning full penetration and all energy expended in the animal.

Another vote here for that 160 Partition. The Sierra can be fragile if heavy bone is encountered.
I shot a very large Elk with a 160 partition, and the penetration was awesome!
Bullet entered at the last rib back on one side, and was recovered under the hide on the front of the opposite shoulder.
Elk went 20 yards and tipped over, end of story.

160gr Partition all the way. I have shot and killed my first moose with the 165gr Sierra out of a 7mm Rem Mag and wasn't too impressed. Two shots broadside at about 150-200 yards. The moose didn't go far and died but neither bullets made it to the off side. Both bullets stopped or desintegrated in the guts without making it to the inside of the rib cage on the off side.

Personally I want a bullet that will offer more penetration than that. In comparaison, I shot another moose with the same 7mm Rem Mag but with a 160gr TSX at a quartering toward angle. The bullet entered between the neck and shoulder, and was recovered in the kidney area of the off side, over 36" of penetration.
 
Gamekings are really frangible bullets, unless shot placement is perfect you could have real problems. Personally I have seen the blow apart on two deer my son shot in the ribs.

Partition is a very good bullet, so is the Barnes TSX, the accubond. My fav of the premium bullets in a magnum rifle is the TSX.

Amen to that. Personally I would run a TTSX instead of the PT for the hunt, but the PT will work great also, as it has been for years!
 
I have killed PILES of game ; sheep, mtn.goats, caribou, whitetails, muleys, bears and moose with the game king in my 7mm Rem Mag. Not just a critter here or there for experimental reasons either, i'm talking 25+ years worth of consistent excellent performance from the Sierra Game King. Shoulders, neck, ribs....7 yards to 400 ....does not matter.
 
of the two choices mentioned, Nosler Partition

if I could pick any bullet, it would probably be the 150gr Barnes TTSX @ 3100 fps (Barnes Vor-Tx factory ammo for the non-handloader)
 
like the others , of the 2 bullets the nosler partion gets picked .......

if i could pick any bullet , first choice would be some variant of barnes x bullet ........ i would also seriously consider hornady's gmx bullet and noslers new version of the x bullet .
