Moose Defence

4 years ago I was attacked by a young cow as I hiked into my trapping cabin. I had chased off a family of wolves that were attacking her and she paid me back by running me down, head butting me and knocking me out. She then proceeded to stomp me into the ground, when I came too she was gone and I limped to my vehicle. The Drs in the ER said I was lucky and spent 2 days there, had my thigh badly banged up. She was young expecting her first calf but was a force to deal with.

My father always told people about the time he was picking berries and heard a noise beside him, he said lovely day, got only a snort, he finished in that spot and stood up, and all he heard was a scream, a mother missed and her calf was that close to him he was I could have poked her with a stick and had a feed hahaha

Ive run up on a cow with a calf once while running in the summer. Im thankful i was in prime shape and a long distance runner. I came around a corner just as they were coming out of a pond. The cow and i stopped about 15 yards from each other. The calf tucked infront and hid to her offside. Her fur went up as i started to walk backwards. She began to follow with her head lower than her hump. Her ears went flat back and she stomped her front feet. I turned and ran back the way i came. There were no big trees it was either water and i cant swim or run up sand dunes of mine tailings. I ran the hardest ive ever run and i could hear her hooves on the gravel behind me. She followed for about 200 yards before she turned off the road. I ran another quater mile at least. Figure i had about a 30 yard head start and she caught up fast. I was running an average of 50 second 400m. Likely beat that that day. If i was any slower i think ida been trampled. I do believe she slowed down.
With a rifle or slug gun i could have stopped her in those 30 yards but i bet most couldnt pull a long gun up in time

Looking at what her feet did to a hard packed gravel and sand roadway theres no way i would have survived gettinf pounded on
